At $59, it’s the cheapest senior-friendly phone on our list and an excellent value if you just want a simple but functional flip phone. The phone is even more appealing to seniors on a budget when combined with one of Consumer Cellular’s plans, which start at just $20 per month — half of what AT&T charges for their 55+ plan.

The IRIS Easy Flip provides all the most important senior cell phone features, such as calling and texting, large, easy-to-recognize keys, and a built-in camera. It even features internet browsing, unlike the Jitterbug Flip2. However, the IRIS Easy Flip lacks the medical alert features available with the Flip2, though it can still dial 911 easily enough. Usability

We really like the IRIS Easy Flip’s simplicity. It doesn’t have lots of extra features like the iPhone 17 does, but it’s easy to navigate and use. When we plugged the phone in to charge, it made a buzzing noise, chimed, and showed a lightning bolt symbol on the outside screen. This is great for seniors who may worry they’re phone isn’t charging.

Despite the easy charging, we weren’t impressed with the battery life. Most flip phones can last longer on a single charge than smartphones like the iPhone 17 because they’re not doing as much in the background. Despite the phone’s relatively basic features, we could only get 7 hours per charge. Having to stop and charge it once during the day and then again overnight can be a hassle, especially if you plan to be away from an outlet.

When we turned the phone on, it had a clearly marked “PWR” for power. When we held this button, the IRIS Easy Flip made a buzzing noise and chime to indicate that it was turning on. All of these features made using the IRIS Easy Flip clear and simple, which we love for older adults who might be new to tech.

The IRIS Easy Flip’s exterior screen provides a lot of useful information, like the time, battery life, and notifications for new messages. The exterior screen can even work with the external camera for selfies when the phone is closed.

Plus, the phone was really easy to use right out of the box. All we had to do was plug it in. Once it was charged, we could start making calls and sending texts.

If you still feel a bit overwhelmed, the IRIS Easy Flip comes with a handy starter guide that can teach you the basics. We also noticed that the phone’s screen is bigger than older flip phone models from Consumer Cellular, such as the Verve Snap, which is why it’s one of the best phones for visually impaired seniors.

One of the biggest drawbacks for us was texting. Unlike a modern touch screen smartphone like the Jitterbug Smart4, the IRIS Easy Flip has a T9 keyboard, which requires you to punch the same buttons multiple times to cycle through letters and spell out words. This can make texting more complicated and time-consuming.

Camera Quality

The 5 MP camera is not great, but it works. I could take some decent photos and videos of my living room and my backyard. They were clear enough, but very low quality compared to the camera on the iPhone 17 or even the Jitterbug Flip2.

It’s also important to note that the IRIS Easy Flip has a rear-facing camera only, but there’s a workaround if you want to take selfies. To enter Selfie Mode, we flipped the phone closed and held the camera button on the side of the phone. This opened the camera app on the external screen. We were happy that we could still take selfies with it, but it was much easier to do it on phones with front-facing cameras, like the Samsung Galaxy A16 5G or Jitterbug Smart4.

Since the phone was closed, the “rear” camera was actually facing us, so we could take selfie photos or videos. The quality still wasn’t great (it’s the same 5 MP camera after all), but it’s an improvement over previous Consumer Cellular phones that didn’t have a Selfie Mode.

Hearing Aid Compatibility

The IRIS Easy Flip has the highest hearing aid compatibility rating (M4/T4), similar to the Jitterbug Flip2. It’s Bluetooth compatible, making it easier to sync with a wide range of hearing aids. I found it fast to get the IRIS Easy Flip synced with my grandma’s hearing aids, and when she made a test call, the sound was crystal clear.

Things to Keep in Mind

Even though it keeps things in a very simple and affordable package, the IRIS Easy Flip is somewhat advanced for the price. I connected to WiFi, browsed the internet (albeit slowly), connected Bluetooth devices (including my grandma’s hearing aids), and even used the phone as a hotspot.

It also has more basic tools, like a calculator, alarm, and calendar, but nothing too high-tech. We think the IRIS Easy Flip offers a great balance if you want an affordable phone that can do a lot more than just send texts and make calls, without having too many extras that could make it complicated to use.

Priced at $119.99, the Jitterbug Smart4 from Lively offers the right balance between the latest smartphone features and ease of use, which is why it’s our top smartphone pick for seniors. Some smartphones overcomplicate things, making it feel like solving a puzzle to find what you need, but the Jitterbug Smart4 keeps it simple. That’ll be welcome news for seniors who’ve tried more advanced phones, like the Samsung Galaxy A15 5G from T-Mobile.

It features a basic list-style menu, a large touch screen, and long battery life. Plus, it still has all the features you’d expect in a smartphone, like GPS navigation, video chatting, a built-in camera, and mobile apps via the Google Play Store.

Usability

We noticed the Jitterbug Smart4 was a step up from flip phones like the Jitterbug Flip2 or the IRIS Easy Flip in terms of features, but it was still easy to use.

The Jitterbug Smart4 comes with medical alert capabilities (for a monthly fee) that offer the same protection as a medical alert device. This is unique for a cell phone, and the 24/7 monitoring and health updates are great for caregivers and family members who want peace of mind.

It’s hard to find a simpler, more senior-friendly smartphone. The Smart4 even made our list of the easiest cell phones for seniors to use. When my grandma turned the phone on, she knew exactly what to press and where to go. She could check her email, text a friend, record a video, or browse the internet without assistance.

Not only was it a breeze to use the Jitterbug Smart4’s intuitive touch screen keyboard, but the phone also allowed us to send texts and navigate the phone with our voices using Google Assistant. We used this feature to set reminders, send texts, and open various apps.

Google Assistant isn’t quite as advanced as its successor, Gemini, which isn’t built into the Smart4. In our opinion, however, Google Assistant still outshines Apple’s Siri and most other virtual assistants on the market.

While testing the Smart4, my grandma and I noticed a slight delay when clicking on certain icons. In one instance, she tried to open her texts, but the phone took two or three seconds to react. She clicked the text icon a second time, only to accidentally open a new text conversation.

If you’re looking for high-speed performance, the Jitterbug Smart4 is not your best option. You’d be better off with the iPhone 16e or the more budget-friendly Samsung Galaxy A16 5G.

Camera Quality

Lively upgraded the Jitterbug Smart4’s camera from the Smart3, but it’s still far from the best. Unlike the IRIS Easy Flip, the Jitterbug Smart4 does have both front- and rear-facing cameras, which means you can easily take selfies with your grandkids. The rear triple-camera system is decent, as we could get clear photos and videos with both.

However, you might find your 32 GB of storage used up quickly if you like to take a lot of videos. By inserting a memory card (sold separately), you can increase your storage to 128 GB. That’s a comparable amount of space to many more expensive cell phones, like the iPhone 17.

We took regular photos and selfies with decent results, but we saw that some of our videos were already taking up a huge chunk of the internal storage.

Hearing Aid Compatibility

The Jitterbug Smart4 has a hearing aid rating of M3/T4, which is not quite as good as the IRIS Easy Flip or the Jitterbug Flip2, but it’s still compatible with most hearing aids and Bluetooth devices.

My grandma tried out the Smart4 with her own hearing aids and had no issues. The sound quality was clear, and it was easy to get the two connected. Just keep in mind that the Jitterbug Smart4 may not work as well with hearing aids in acoustic coupling mode.

Things to Keep in Mind

Lively’s phone plans begin at $14.99. If you’re on a tight budget, consider that you’ll have to pay both a product and an activation fee ($35) up front. I’m no fan of fees, and paying what amounted to more than two months of service (on the cheapest Lively plan) felt excessive to me.

However, the Jitterbug Smart4’s device fee is very affordable compared to other smartphones on the market. For example, the iPhone 16e, Apple’s cheapest smartphone model, starts at $599.99 — more than five times the price of the Smart4. Plus, new Lively customers typically receive big discounts on up-front fees.

If you sign up for one of Lively’s higher-tier packages with health and safety features, you’ll pay a larger monthly fee. Luckily, Lively offers a 30-day trial period to return your device for a full refund, minus a $10 restocking fee.

At $829.99, it’s the most expensive phone on this list, but it features Ceramic Shield 2 glass that’s very drop-resistant. We did a few drop tests and found no visible damage. Apple also claims it can be submerged in water up to 20 feet deep for up to 30 minutes. We think its durability and water resistance are excellent for older adults who might be hard on their devices.

With the NameDrop feature, you can simply set your iPhone 17 next to someone else’s to share your contact information. NameDrop is a great feature for older adults who want to add contacts without the hassle of texting, emailing, or even writing down names and numbers.

The iPhone 17 also boasts the “action” button that can be used to do just about whatever you want — from turning on your phone’s flashlight to transforming your phone’s camera into a magnifying glass. Seniors who aren’t as tech-savvy may need help getting the action button set up (my grandma did).

Usability

We found the iPhone 17 easy to pick up and start using. My grandma, an iPhone owner herself, had a similar experience, though she did struggle initially with the action button. We talked about what it could potentially do — like zoom in on things or record voice memos.

But she felt a little overwhelmed when it was time to actually go into the settings and tell the iPhone what she wanted the button to do. For this reason, we think the iPhone 17 is best suited for more tech-savvy seniors. While users can simply ignore the action button and avoid the hassle of setting it up, we think it’s a great feature for seniors willing to take the time to learn how it works. In our opinion, it also helps make the iPhone 17 worth the cost.

From our experience, the iPhone 17 is able to withstand a lot without taking a scratch. It feels strong, and our drop tests proved that its titanium exterior is great at keeping your phone safe, even if it slips out of your hands.

My grandma and I agree that the iPhone 17’s Dual Fusion 48 MP camera is phenomenal. It’s easy to use and produces some of the highest-quality photos and videos we’ve seen from a smartphone.

It also strikes a good balance between usability and features. We customized photos with different depths of field and filters. If you’re not interested in customization features, you can just take photos and record videos that look great without the extra steps.

In terms of its specs, the only phone camera that outperforms the iPhone 17 on our list is the Samsung Galaxy A16 5G. That makes it a great choice for seniors who are willing to pay a little extra to get the familiarity of an iPhone and a high-end camera.

Hearing Aid Compatibility

The iPhone 17 has an M3/T4 rating, so it works with most kinds of hearing aids. Like the Jitterbug Smart4, it is more compatible with induction hearing aids, but you can still make it work with most hearing devices on the market. The Galaxy A16 5G from T-Mobile has an ultra-long-lasting battery with fast charging capabilities, great for those who often forget to charge their phones. We never had to worry about a dead battery throughout the day — something we couldn’t say with the IRIS Easy Flip. Thanks to its fast-charging feature, we didn’t have to sit around waiting for hours for the device to charge fully, either.

T-Mobile's prices make it easy to shop for a senior-friendly phone at a budget-friendly price. At $228, or $9.50 per month for 24 months, the Samsung Galaxy A16 5G is one of the more affordable high-tech smartphones. While it’s around $109 more than the Jitterbug Smart4, it offers more advanced features and a much better camera.

Usability

While the Samsung Galaxy A16 5G may not be as user-friendly as the iPhone 17 or Jitterbug Smart4, it’s still easy to learn the basics. The home screen has a Google search bar in the middle. It also uses large icons, so it was easy for us to make a phone call, download an app, send a text, or take a photo from the main menu.

The Galaxy A16 has 44 hours of talk time or 16 days of standby time when you’re not actively using it. This is about twice as long as the battery life on the iPhone 16e. Having that much power on a single charge can give seniors extra peace of mind, as you won’t need to rush to the nearest outlet as long as you’ve charged it the night before.

One drawback we noticed is the brightness. The standard brightness level makes the screen look relatively dull. Turning the brightness all the way up reduces the A16’s best feature: its long battery life.

My grandma struggled to make out text with the default brightness, so we had to turn it up. Using the phone outside also presented a challenge, as the screen is not very resistant to glare. This meant we had to juggle visibility with battery power depending on the environment, which became a little inconvenient.

While the casing of the phone did not have a direct impact on its usability, we can see how it might not be ideal if you want a phone that will last for years to come. The back casing felt a little cheap and lightweight. If you’re very careful with your phone, this shouldn’t be much of an issue.

The Samsung Galaxy A16 5G is also not waterproof, nor is it very resistant to dust or fall damage. If you’re worried about dropping your phone, you’re much better off with a strong, durable model like the iPhone 17 or Jitterbug Smart4.

We found the camera on the Samsung Galaxy A16 5G is outstanding. The main 50 MP camera takes beautiful photos and videos, with plenty of options to adjust the lens settings. When we wanted to take selfies, we had the 13 MP front-facing camera, which is still better than the main camera on the IRIS Easy Flip.

My grandma and I had a blast using the A16’s camera to take pictures and record videos. Considering that the Samsung Galaxy A16 5G is just $228, it’s the best phone for seniors who want to stick to a budget without sacrificing quality photos and videos.

For seniors who want a smartphone with all the latest features, the iPhone 16e from T-Mobile offers that extra “oomph” without going too far over budget. It has a retina HD touch screen and 48 MP and 12 MP cameras. We watched videos in 4K quality, FaceTimed with friends and family, and had plenty of room (up to 512 GB) to store data, photos, and more.

If you’re worried about security, iPhone data is encrypted, and the home screen features Touch ID, which, like the Samsung Galaxy A16 5G, uses your unique fingerprint to unlock the phone. The iPhone 16e is also hearing aid-compatible, features a bright screen, and is easy to grip — great features for older eyes, ears, and hands.

While the iPhone 16e is available from several cell phone carriers, we’d recommend going with T-Mobile. They’re always offering deals for new customers who purchase an iPhone. Plus, T-Mobile offers three unlimited 55+ plans that provide steep discounts on talk, text, and data. These plans have many perks, including in-flight Wi-Fi (which we took full advantage of on a trip to Mexico), service abroad, and free Apple TV+.

Usability

The iPhone 17 and the iPhone 16e are easy to navigate, and both use the same standard iOS system. We think the iPhone 16e is a bit easier to use, as it is essentially a pared-down version of the iPhone 17. It may not be quite as fast as the iPhone 17, but the iPhone 16e is still a highly advanced phone that works well for a wide range of activities, from FaceTiming with friends to playing mobile games.

My grandma loved using the iPhone 16e, especially because it’s a little smaller and fit very comfortably in the palm of her hand. When she wanted to read something, however, the small screen size proved to be a bit challenging. With a 6.1-inch screen, the iPhone 16e doesn’t make it as easy to read as the 6.75-inch screen on the Jitterbug Smart4.

Fortunately, the iPhone 16e’s built-in operating system has plenty of accessibility features to make things easier for those with hearing or vision loss. However, none of these features are as convenient as simply having a larger screen.

One thing that my grandma didn’t like about the iPhone 16e is the fingerprint scanner. At first, she thought accessing her phone with just a fingerprint was great. However, she found that if she didn’t position her finger correctly, used the wrong finger, or had recently washed her hands, the phone would not let her sign in without a passcode.

Camera Quality

The 48 MP camera on the iPhone 16e is great, and based on our testing, the image quality is comparable to the photos we took with the iPhone 17. The 12 MP front-facing camera is a little underwhelming for an iPhone, but we still took good selfies and videos.

One nice thing about the iPhone 16e’s camera is that it makes it really easy to switch between photos and videos with the swipe of a finger. If you want to make even more interesting visuals, you can create slow-motion videos, as well as portrait and panoramic photos. We took decent photos on a hike and selfies at home with family.

Hearing Aid Compatibility

The iPhone 16e has an M3/T4 hearing aid compatibility rating. Once again, this puts it on par with many other smartphones, but it also means that it may not be compatible with every hearing aid product on the market. We connected the iPhone 16e to my grandma’s hearing aids easily, and since the iPhone 16e is Bluetooth-ready, it’s easy to connect to most Bluetooth devices (including hearing aids).

We were able to navigate the phone, draft text messages, make calls, and set timers — just by speaking.

My grandma fell in love with the simplicity of the Jitterbug Flip2 as soon as we unboxed it. The Jitterbug Flip2 has an 8 MP camera that can take photos and low-resolution videos. It still takes better pictures and videos than the IRIS Easy Flip, but they are relatively low quality compared to more advanced phones like the Samsung Galaxy A16 5G.

Still, I took clear pictures of my grandma, the garden, and my dog with the phone. Unlike the IRIS Easy Flip, the Jitterbug Flip2 has a front-facing camera for selfies, but the image quality is less than stellar. That said, at least we didn’t have to go through extra steps to take selfies like we did with the IRIS Easy Flip.
