How We Tested the Free Phones

Our tech team spent over 150 hours researching and testing free phones offered by some of the nation’s top carriers. We tested each carrier using the same process to fairly compare them. Here’s what our testing process looked like:

  1. We researched the best phone deals for seniors and spoke with each carrier’s customer service representatives. We considered the value and any extra perks each free phone offered. Our tech team also visited each carrier’s website and evaluated how easy it was to navigate the website and find the best free phone deals without assistance.
  2. We evaluated the variety of plans available through each carrier and considered the price of each plan to see if some plans offered a better overall value compared to others. We also considered plan limitations for free phones, as many carriers force you to choose one of their higher-tier plans or sign up for several years of service to get your phone free of charge.
  3. We then ordered each phone and noted how to get each free phone deal and any hoops we had to jump through. Our tech team used each phone and carrier plan for one week. We made calls (regular and video calls), watched videos, streamed content, and generally tested the reliability of the carrier’s service at home and on the go. We recruited older adults to help us test the phones whenever possible. That allowed us to get feedback directly from seniors.

How We Chose the Best Free Cell Phones for Seniors

Not all carriers offer the same free phone, and the number of brands and models can be confusing. After researching extensively for hundreds of hours, our tech experts decided on the best free phones for seniors. We used these criteria to choose the top no-cost phones: the availability of senior-friendly features, customer perks, usability, carrier reputation and reliability, and camera quality.

We also focused on these two factors: ease of acquiring the phone and usability for seniors. Some carriers have you jump through several hoops or sign a contract to score a free phone. We prioritized carriers that explained how to recieve the free phone and made the process easy.

Because we’re highlighting the best phones for seniors, we evaluated each device’s usability. There’s no point in getting a free phone if it’s too complicated! We looked for phones that offer senior-friendly features such as bright screens, large buttons, powerful speakers, accessibility settings, and intuitive navigation.

Why Trust Us

Our senior tech experts test the latest products and tech for older adults each year. We’ve spent hundreds of hours testing and reviewing cell phones and plans available through regional and nationwide carriers. We consult with seniors to learn about their experiences with different phone models, including what they liked, disliked, and features they would like to see in a free or low-cost phone.
