How We Chose the Best Assisted Living in Colorado Springs

Picking the right assisted living for yourself or a family member is no small decision. There are various factors you’ll need to consider, including your family’s budget and the desired lifestyle of your senior. This is why we put so much care, attention, and research into finding the best assisted living communities in Colorado Springs.

When choosing the best assisted living communities in Colorado Springs, we examined and compared the following criteria:

  • Cost: We focused our search on communities that offer the best value. In other words, the value for each facility on our list either matched or exceeded its prices. We also searched for some of Colorado Springs’ most affordable options.
  • Medical care: The degree of medical care can vary from one community to the next. Many of the best facilities often have medical personnel on standby.
  • Reviews: While good reviews do not guarantee good quality, we consider assisted living communities that consistently receive positive reviews from trusted sources.
  • Amenities: Having more amenities does not always mean having better amenities, but many of the best assisted living communities offer a wide array of services and perks designed for seniors.
  • Location: We selected communities with accessibility and proximity to shopping and entertainment, which can greatly improve the quality of life for residents.
  • Staff size: We chose assisted living communities with high staff-to-patient ratios.

How to Find the Right Assisted Living Community for You

The idea of spending time finding the right assisted living community may sound like a huge pain, but doing your due diligence on the best facilities in your area is key. After all, it’s better to learn about the pros and cons of assisted living before you or a loved one moves in. Here are a few tips to help you in your search:

  • Learn how assisted living differs from other types of senior living. This may sound obvious, but many people may not understand how the services at an assisted living facility differ from a nursing home or a skilled nursing facility. Researching different types of communities will help you know if assisted living is still the best option for you. If you decide that it is, you can then begin the process of narrowing down your options.
  • Set a reasonable long-term budget. It’s relatively easy to know what you can afford this month or even this year, but what about five years from now? Since Medicare and Medicaid typically don’t cover the cost of assisted living, you’ll probably be depending on a combination of resources, like Social Security benefits, savings, and even long-term care insurance. But since your savings will likely decrease further into your retirement, make sure that you pick a facility that will remain affordable for the long term.
  • Talk to staff and residents. It’s always important to visit an assisted living facility before you decide to move in. However, a guided tour might not tell you everything you need to know. So, try to speak to staff and residents to ask questions about their experiences. If the feedback is negative or the facility is reticent to let you speak with people, you should probably look elsewhere.
  • Ask about certifications and inspections. Every assisted living community needs to meet certain standards to provide senior care in the state of Colorado. Just because a facility meets the minimum standards does not mean that it will provide great care to you or a loved one. Ask about certifications the facility has, and even discuss inspections from the Department of Health to determine if the community has any deficiencies.
  • Read the reviews. When in doubt, read what others have to say about different assisted living communities. You shouldn’t base your decision solely on reviews you find online, but they can be a great way to guide you toward better facilities and steer you away from ones that won’t meet your needs. Once you’ve narrowed the search down to a few solid options, go with your gut!

What Is Living in Colorado Springs Like for Seniors?

Colorado Springs is a great place to enjoy retirement. From the fresh mountain air to the great public transportation (with senior discounts), Colorado Springs has plenty to offer people entering retirement. If you’ve never been to the city before or you’re unsure if you want to spend your retirement in Colorado Springs, here are a few factors to consider:

  • Climate: Colorado Springs has a relatively mild climate, though the winters can get quite cold. The temperature typically peaks in the mid-80s (Fahrenheit) during the summer months, but it can fall below 20 degrees in December and January. The city also sees an average of 33.6 inches of snow each year,2 so it may not be ideal for seniors who like to drive frequently or for those who want to avoid the cold entirely.
  • Entertainment: Though Colorado Springs is primarily known for its natural attractions, like Pikes Peak and its many parks and walking trails, it also has plenty of urban entertainment options for seniors. Some of the most popular attractions include the many bars, restaurants, museums, and fine art centers that populate the city.
  • Health care: Colorado Springs has several large hospitals, like the UCHealth Memorial Hospital and Penrose-St. Francis Health Services, as well as dozens of smaller clinics. Not only does the quality of health care tend to be very good in Colorado Springs, but the costs are 8 percent lower than the national average.
  • Cost of living: While health care costs tend to be lower, the overall cost of living is higher than the average among cities of similar size in the United States. Fortunately, if you own property, Colorado does offer tax exemptions for seniors age 65 and older, which can help ease the financial burden of living in the state. However, it’s important to note that, unlike most states, Colorado does tax Social Security benefits at the state level.3

How Much Does Assisted Living Cost in Colorado Springs, Colorado?

The estimated median cost of assisted living in the United States is approximately $4,917 per month in 20245. The estimated median cost of assisted living in Colorado Springs is currently $5,095 per month. This means that the average monthly cost of assisted living in Colorado Springs is around 3.5 percent higher than in the rest of the country.

However, it’s important to remember that when you pay for assisted living, you’re not just paying for accommodations. Your monthly fee will typically cover the cost of your accommodations, utilities, food, communal activities, and daily care. If you and a spouse or partner want to enter assisted living together, you could potentially save money by sharing a room in the same facility. Keep in mind that even though it costs a little more than the national average, the cost of assisted living in Colorado Springs is commensurate with the local cost of living.
