Wilmington is a beautiful port city with miles of beaches and nature preserves along the coast of North Carolina. Known for its buzzing Riverwalk district, Wilmington is a great place to shop, go to the beach, visit a museum, or simply relax in the comfort of a seaside city — all in one day! Wilmington boasts a population of just over 120,000, approximately 21,000 of whom are 65 years or older. The population has grown over the past few decades, so the number of seniors is expected to rise in the coming years.1

Wilmington has something to offer people of all ages, but it is particularly well-suited to seniors, including those who need assisted living. There are more than two dozen retirement homes throughout the city, and about half offer assisted living care. That means there are plenty of places where seniors can get professional help with activities of daily living (ADLs) such as bathing, walking, dressing, and eating.

We’ve compiled a list of the best assisted living communities in Wilmington, North Carolina. Continue reading to see which community may be the right choice for you.

Our Methodology: How We Chose the Best Assisted Living in Wilmington

Wilmington doesn’t have as many assisted living facilities as nearby cities like Charlotte, which made it even more important to identify the communities that stand above the others in the area. To narrow down the contenders, we conducted 50 hours of research, focusing on several important factors.

  • Cost: The cost of assisted living in Wilmington is somewhat high compared to the city’s median cost of living. Since older adults who need assisted living have different financial situations, we try to balance cost with value.
  • Available care: Every community on our list provides at least one service or lifestyle option plus assisted living. Common options include independent living, memory care, and respite care.
  • Reviews: We read hundreds of reviews and included the most pertinent information in our analysis. Groups of reviews often include common themes related to the advantages or disadvantages of a community.
  • Amenities: Amenities set assisted living apart from a facility that provides only medical care. We focus our research on communities with more than one special amenity to make assisted living fun and engaging.
  • Location: Location is not as important in a midsize city like Wilmington, but it still plays a role in the research process. We include assisted living communities close to popular attractions such as parks, golf courses, and shopping.
  • Staff size: We highlighted assisted living communities that offer high staff-to-resident ratios, often with a maximum of eight residents per caregiver.

Spring Arbor of Wilmington has many activities to keep seniors physically active and socially engaged but with fewer other amenities. The campus has limited luxuries, particularly compared to our other picks. What it lacks in amenities, however, it more than makes up for in activity programs, such as Art From the Heart, Hearts and Harmony, and Wise and Well. The programs make Spring Arbor of Wilmington a great choice for older adults who want to stay active and social daily but don’t want to pay more for amenities they may not use very often. Opportunities to stay active are essential since getting at least 150 minutes of physical activity per week can help improve brain health, manage weight, and reduce the risk of age-related diseases.2

    Feedback and Reviews

Spring Arbor of Wilmington generally receives positive reviews from residents, family members, staff, and volunteers. Some reviews praise the administrators for being flexible and friendly, while others mention the beautiful landscaping and clean facilities. Most reviews are positive, but there’s been negative feedback about individual staff members. Fortunately, negative reviews are far less common and often linked to specific situations and circumstances. One family member, for example, was dissatisfied when the facility changed to a new executive director.

    Highlights

    • Independent living, catered assisted living, assisted living, and memory care
    • Six unique room layouts
    • Technology-based care
    • Beautiful interior design

    Overview

Brightmore of Wilmington sits right in the middle of Long Leaf Park, giving residents and visitors a beautiful view of the surrounding nature whenever they step outside. That makes walking and staying active outdoors very convenient, which is essential to maintaining physical and mental health as you age.

Brightmore is also unique from other assisted living communities in Wilmington, such as Spring Arbor of Wilmington and New Hanover House, because it includes independent living as an option for residents. Brightmore is separated into two communities: the Kempton and the Commons. The Kempton offers “catered” assisted living, giving residents the freedom of independent living with assistive services available as needed. If you or a loved one are looking for more hands-off care that allows for more independence, the Kempton is an excellent choice since that type of assisted living is unique for the city. Alternatively, the Commons is a more traditional facility with standard assisted living and memory care.

    Pro Tip:

Pro Tip: If you don’t need assisted living yet but want to enjoy some of the same amenities and perks, consider finding a 55-plus community near you!

With six room layouts to choose from and a gorgeous interior design, Brightmore is a great place for seniors who want to live in an upscale retirement home. Like New Hanover House, Brightmore is packed with great amenities, such as a putting green, billiards room, fitness center, chapel, and gift shop. The gift shop includes essential items residents can purchase, making getting the essentials easy with one run to a nearby supermarket or convenience store.

Brightmore of Wilmington is also a Certified Nxtgen Care Community because it uses the latest technology, such as solar-powered health monitor bracelets, to efficiently respond to resident needs. We are big fans of this unique technology contributing to resident health and well-being since we don’t see it in many communities.

    Feedback and Reviews

Both communities at Brightmore generally receive positive feedback from online reviewers. The Kempton is often praised for its comfortable apartments and clean facilities. Some reviews, however, have criticized the community for being too close to independent living and not offering enough assistance to residents requiring daily help. The Commons has been praised for its communicative administrators, but some have complained of issues related to transportation services.

    Highlights

    • Independent living, assisted living, memory care, skilled nursing, and rehabilitation
    • Four unique floor plans
    • Modern, comfortable furnishings and accommodations
    • Regular off-campus excursions

    Overview

Champions Assisted Living is just one part of the Davis Community, located at the western edge of the Eagle Point Golf Club. It has various buildings across its large campus, including independent living cottages and a large resident facility for seniors requiring assistance. It can house dozens of assisted living residents, unlike smaller residential communities such as Coastal Cove of Wilmington. If you’re looking for a slightly larger community to socialize, Champions is a solid choice.

The community also offers more enhanced levels of care than Brightmore or Spring Arbor, since it provides skilled nursing care. The enhanced care comes at a higher cost, though, and Champions Assisted Living is one of the most expensive communities on this list. That makes Champions a good option for seniors with a higher budget and who want access to more varied levels of care.

Did You Know? Less than one-third of Americans over the age of 50 have started saving for long-term care.3

Residents of Champions Assisted Living can enjoy a wide range of social and cultural amenities, including social clubs, art studios, and regular trips to local museums. The community calendar is full of fun activities, from sing-a-longs and movie nights to yoga and exercise classes. Champions also offers weekly communion to Catholic residents. The community is a great option for seniors willing to pay more each month for access to top-tier services and amenities.

    Feedback and Reviews

Nearly all the reviews for Champions Assisted Living are positive. Many family members note the clean common areas and friendly staff. As a whole, the Davis Community has received average reviews, with various reviews critiquing the rehabilitation services. One reviewer noted that they were given only four days’ notice to make the arrangements to move their family member from rehab to another facility. Another reviewer complained that the short-staffed rehab was unable to check their family member for UTIs promptly.

  • 5. Coastal Cove of Wilmington

Upscale Residential Care Home in Eagles Nest

    $5,500 per month

1120 Beasley Road, Wilmington, NC 28409

    Highlights

    • Assisted living and memory care
    • High staff-to-resident ratio
    • Homestyle accommodations
    • Small community for up to six residents

    Overview

Situated in the Eagles Nest neighborhood, Coastal Cove of Wilmington is a 4,400-square-foot residential care home for assisted living and memory care. It boasts a three-to-one resident-to-staff ratio, far better than most larger facilities, including Champions Assisted Living. The home can accommodate only six residents at a time, which helps foster a greater sense of community and a home-away-from-home feeling for many seniors. The small, cozy atmosphere makes Coastal Cove ideal for older adults who want to feel like they’re surrounded by a family of residents and staff.

» Compare Care Options: Assisted Living vs. Memory Care

Coastal Cove of Wilmington specializes in helping older adults with mild cognitive impairments, but it can also provide care for Alzheimer’s and dementia patients. In addition to medtechs, RNs, and CNAs, Coastal Cove has a licensed assisted living administrator on site daily. For added security, the property features secured keyless entry and multiple security cameras in public areas. Those are typical safety features at large assisted living facilities, but they’re not common with smaller home-size facilities, so we appreciate that level of security. In addition to all those services, the small community has an activities director who works with residents to plan fun activities and outings regularly.

    Feedback and Reviews

Coastal Cove of Wilmington receives overwhelmingly positive reviews. Common themes include careful attention to detail and personalized care plans for each resident. It’s important to note that Coastal Cove is a relatively new community, so it has not had much time to get feedback from residents, family members, or staff.

How to Find the Right Assisted Living Community for You

We selected our top picks for assisted living in Wilmington, but you’ll need to consider a variety of factors specific to you, your situation, and your family to make the right decision. Here are a few things to think about as you compare communities.

  • Identify your needs: Are you struggling to get in and out of the bathtub? Do you often forget when to take your medication? What specific types of care are you looking for? Answering these questions will help you identify your needs and find a community that can satisfy them.
  • Review your budget: Wilmington is not an expensive city compared to similarly sized cities in the United States, but the cost of assisted living is still pretty high. While analyzing your budget, remember Medicare doesn’t cover assisted living in most cases and many seniors depend on Social Security benefits, retirement savings, and long-term care insurance to cover costs.
  • Read reviews: Reading community reviews can help you understand the pros and cons of living there. Many reviews are written by staff and family members (not as many by residents), which means you can get insights related to the working environment for caregivers and the potential difficulties families face.
  • Visit communities: Seeing an assisted living community in person helps you get a feel for day-to-day life there. It’s the next best thing to actually moving in! You can talk to residents, ask questions of staff members, and see if the community suits your tastes and needs.
  • Check licensing and certifications: While researching a community, check that it has up-to-date licensing and certifications to operate in North Carolina.
  • Trust your gut: When in doubt, don’t let yourself stress! Choosing an assisted living community is a big decision, but if you find yourself trying to pick between two or three good options, trust your gut.

What Is Living in Wilmington Like for Seniors?

Wilmington is slower and more relaxed than most big cities, a huge plus for seniors who want to enjoy a tranquil environment. As a coastal city, it also gives residents access to various environments. Below is a quick look at what life is like for older adults in Wilmington.

  • Climate: Wilmington has a humid subtropical climate with mild winters and hot summers. Fortunately, the sea breeze helps make summer temperatures bearable, making it a comfortable climate for older adults.
  • Health care: Wilmington has several major hospitals and dozens of clinics that perform well against state- and national-level data.
  • Cost of living: The cost of living in Wilmington is average to slightly below average. It is roughly 4 percent lower than the national average, but the cost of assisted living in Wilmington is well above the national average.
  • Walkability: Certain areas of Wilmington are walkable, such as Downtown and Carolina Heights, but most of the city is better for biking. Fortunately, many assisted living communities in Wilmington provide transportation services, and Wilmington has several public bus routes.
  • Activities: Despite its relatively small size compared to Charlotte, Wilmington has a lot of fun activities for seniors. Some of the most popular activity sites include public parks, golf courses, museums, nature reserves, and local beaches.
  • Safety: Wilmington is generally a safe city for people of all ages. It does not see a lot of violent crime, but certain neighborhoods are more dangerous than others.
  • Tax structure: North Carolina’s income tax rate is 4.75 percent, which is lower than the national average.4 The state doesn’t have inheritance or estate taxes, which could have a positive impact on your estate planning.

How Much Does Assisted Living Cost in Wilmington, North Carolina?

According to Genworth, the estimated median cost of an assisted living community in Wilmington is $7,755 per month in 2024. That’s nearly 29 percent higher than the national median of $5,511.5

Compared to most other cities in the region, Wilmington has much higher costs associated with assisted living and senior care. There are fewer assisted living communities in Wilmington, however, which may make the median appear higher based on the fees of just a few facilities. A community’s location and the level of care you require can impact your costs. Memory care, for example, tends to be far more expensive than assisted living, since it requires more intensive care. Either way, you can often find communities with base fees that fall well below the average for the city.
