Nestled on the Gulf of Mexico in southwest Florida, Naples is a popular tourist destination attractive to seniors – more than half of the city’s population of almost 20,000 people is over 65.1 The city offers miles of white-sand beaches, Old Florida architecture, a historic fishing pier, dozens of golf courses, a botanical garden, nature preserves, and walking trails for outdoor exercise and exploration. In addition to year-round outdoor recreation, downtown Naples boasts cultural opportunities and high-end restaurants and shopping.

For people who need assistance with activities of daily living (ADL), such as bathing, dressing and eating, Naples offers more than 30 assisted living communities to suit a range of budgets, care needs, and personal interests. Here are five of our top picks for assisted living communities to consider in Naples, Florida.

Our Methodology: How We Chose the Best Assisted Living in Naples

Choosing an assisted living community can be an overwhelming decision for many families. There are numerous factors to consider, which is why our team of senior living experts conduct extensive research before recommending assisted living communities. We spent over 50 hours researching the best communities. Here are some of the criteria we use to evaluate each assisted living option in Naples:

  • Cost: Because assisted living is a significant expenditure for most families, we carefully consider what residents get for their money in each community and whether low-income options are available in a given area. Costs included in this guide come from the community’s website or conversations with staff over the phone.
  • Available care: Communities vary regarding how much access residents have to doctors and registered nurses. For example, some communities have on-site RNs available 24/7, while others do not. We consider availability and access regarding medical personnel in our evaluation.
  • Accessible design elements: We look for design elements that take seniors’ comfort and safety into account, such as padded, well-lit walking paths; accessible bathrooms; countertops, and cabinets; and emergency response systems in individual units.
  • Online reviews: Consistent accounts regarding a community posted by residents, family members, visitors, and employees in online reviews can help create an overall picture of life in assisted living communities. We read through dozens of reviews for each community to find the common themes (both positive and negative) and convey them in this guide.
  • Location: We consider nearby amenities, natural elements, and transportation options of each community in our evaluation.
  • Resident-to-staff ratio: A high number of qualified staff available to each resident can improve safety, health, and quality of life.

    • Competitive monthly rates, particularly for amenities offered

    Overview

Beach House is operated by Grace Management, a senior living company with 20 properties nationwide. This community offers a variety of apartment layouts, with studios starting at 365 square feet and two-bedroom, two-bath units up to 919 square feet. Assisted living apartments have full kitchens or kitchenettes, and some include balconies, patios, and washer/dryer setups. The community is centrally located, less than a 10-minute drive downtown, a 10-minute drive to the beach and Naples Pier, and less than five minutes to the Conservancy of Southwest Florida, a wildlife preservation area.

But there’s plenty for residents to do without leaving the community. The landscaped grounds include a pond with ducks, space for socializing, and a putting green. These intentional common spaces offer opportunities for residents to build community, enjoy nature, and avoid isolation. Beach House also offers residents a full calendar of activities, including walking clubs, balance fitness classes, chair yoga, art therapy, and movie and trivia nights. Residents have access to a bistro, concierge services, an outdoor pool, a billiards room, and a library. Those who need it can receive assistance with ADLs and opt for medication reminders and management. They can also take part in wellness programs, including physical therapy and mobility classes.

» Learn More: Active senior living communities

Because it offers competitively-priced large two-bedroom, two-bath units, Beach House might be an easier adjustment for couples or singles used to living in larger homes and having a lot of space. Some communities, such as The Collier, No. 2 on our list, only offer studios and one-bedroom units for assisted living, so we appreciate this variety of larger offerings for those who want it. The pleasant outdoor areas for walking and socializing also make Beach House a great choice for seniors used to living in more suburban settings.

    Types of Care

Beach House offers assisted living, memory care, and respite care. The community has a comprehensive memory care program, if transitioning from assisted living to memory care might be necessary, so it’s a good choice for people experiencing cognitive decline. Memory care rooms are designed to avoid overstimulation and highlight sensory cues to help residents retain their sense of independence. Beach House staff have completed Certified Dementia Practitioner training for Alzheimer’s and dementia care (as required by Florida law). The community also offers technology designed especially for older adults – It’s Never 2 Late (iN2L™), which is easy to use and aids cognitive stimulation. We love technology geared towards older adults, as it can be an excellent, empowering tool!

Did You Know? The number of Floridians with Alzheimer’s disease is estimated to increase by 24%, to 720,000 people, by 2025, according to the Florida Department of Elder Affairs.2

    Feedback and Reviews

Overall, this community has received many positive reviews from residents, their families, and employees. One reviewer, however, wrote she was displeased with the level of care her mother received after Grace Management took over the facility. She cited problems with the upkeep of her mother’s room, insufficient night staff, and unresponsive management. Another reviewer found the desk staff rude. But several other reviewers wrote that they found the community beautiful and the staff accommodating. Many reviews noted that they had family members living at Beach House and that they felt their loved ones were receiving quality care.

    Highlights

    • Private and semiprivate rooms
    • On-site health care services
    • Close to river walking trails and hospital

    Overview

The apartments at The Collier are bright and decorated simply, and many have views overlooking the Gordon River Greenway and its walking trails. The community is minutes to high-end restaurants, shopping, and the many art galleries of downtown Naples. Consequently,  it’s a good option for people looking for more urban amenities than communities in suburban, remote settings, such as Barrington Terrace (No. 4 on our list). It’s also an easy drive to the Baker Museum and NCH Baker Downtown Hospital.

Starting monthly costs are explained on The Collier website, although fees for most communities vary depending on the level of care residents require. We appreciate this upfront pricing transparency, as some communities don’t list prices online, making it difficult to know if they’ll fit your budget. Assisted living care plans at The Collier cover meals, health care supervision, medication management, laundry, housekeeping, and assistance with ADLs, based on your loved one’s needs. Nursing services are available 24 hours a day, and on-site health care services for residents include lab work, speech and occupational therapy, physical therapy, pharmaceutical services, and X-rays.

» Related Reading: Affordable senior housing

Semiprivate room options offer much more affordable monthly rates than some of the other communities on this list, such as Moorings Park at Grey Oaks, making the Collier a good option for families with some budget restrictions who want to make sure their loved ones receive quality medical care. The community also has a schedule of more traditional activities, such as concerts by visiting musicians, games, bingo, singalongs, movie nights, crafts, and church services.

    Types of Care

We appreciate that many health care services are provided on-site at The Collier, such as labs and 24-hour nursing care, which can be a huge help for seniors who no longer drive or whose families live too far away to take them to health care appointments. Like Barrington Terrace, The Collier offers a program between assisted living and memory care to help keep residents experiencing very mild cognitive issues independent and stimulated. Such programs can offer peace of mind for families concerned about a loved one’s memory issues but whose difficulties are not severe enough to require memory-care level supervision.

    Feedback and Reviews

Across several review websites, user experiences with The Collier House are generally positive. Residents and their family members noted that they found the facilities clean and the staff friendly, caring, and competent. Several reviewers said they were impressed with the quality of the medical care team and with the food, as well. One reviewer, however, wrote that the staff could not tell her when her elderly mother was last showered. This same reviewer also expressed concern that her mother had been handled roughly and that staff didn’t seem to notice when residents missed meals.

    Highlights

    • Partnership with Florida Gulf Coast University offers a variety of courses and lectures
    • Extensive health and wellness offerings for residents
    • Rubberized walking paths that are easier on joints and protective against falls

    Overview

Moorings Park at Grey Oaks offers assisted living and memory care; the nonprofit Moorings Park operates other communities on the property that provide skilled nursing, rehabilitation, and outpatient therapy. On the expensive side, with fees for assisted living hovering near $10,000 a month, Moorings Park at Grey Oaks offers resort-style assisted living in a community within the Grey Oaks Country Club and located near several golf clubs and other country clubs. The property is also 10 minutes from the Naples Zoo at Caribbean Gardens and the Conservancy of Southwest Florida and less than 20 minutes from the Naples Pier and beach.

Older adults interested in health and wellness will enjoy the many programs available at the 37,000-square-foot Center for Healthy Living, which offers physician care, a spa, fitness studio, and group exercise classes. Because of its hefty price tag, Moorings Park at Grey Oaks is a great choice for seniors active and healthy enough to take advantage of the community’s wealth of opportunities for sports and wellness activities. The less fitness-minded might be satisfied with the more low-key activities offered at other communities on our list, such as The Collier and Barrington Terrace. Moorings Park at Grey Oaks is a great choice for people who enjoy the country club lifestyle and are able to afford it.

» Dive Deeper: Resort-style assisted living

Assisted living residents receive 24-hour assistance with ADLs and can see occupational, physical, and speech therapists for rehabilitative care at the Center, as well. Assisted living residences are available for a monthly fee. Moorings Park also offers independent living buy-in residences and concierge nursing services.

Residents can take advantage of Naples’ mild weather with several poolside and patio dining options, golfing on the putting green, strolling on padded walking paths or in the butterfly garden, or just relaxing in one of three landscaped courtyards. Seniors passionate about lifelong learning can participate in a range of continuing education programs Moorings Park offers via a partnership with Florida Gulf Coast University. Residents can take classes and hear lectures on a broad range of topics, including technology, investing, travel, and food. We appreciate this opportunity for older adults to learn and engage in the local community!

    Types of Care

Moorings Park at Grey Oaks offers assisted living and memory care. The community is one of three Moorings Park campuses; other campuses offer independent living and skilled nursing nearby. The community pays as much attention to comprehensive health care as it does to country club luxury, with concierge nursing services and on-site access to physicians and therapists. Residents who enjoy the active lifestyle Moorings Park offers can be confident that quality health care is available, as well, when or if their health or need for assistance changes.

    Feedback and Reviews

There are fewer online reviews for Moorings Park at Grey Oaks than is typical for assisted living facilities. Some reviewers who visited the community were enthused about the setting and amenities but said the rooms were on the small side and not updated. Other reviewers wrote that the food was excellent and that their loved ones were happy living there. Another reviewer noted that there seemed to be a variety of activities for residents and that the facility appeared clean.

    Highlights

    • Guest suites available for visitors
    • Pet-friendly
    • Concierge services available
    • Bridges Neighborhood, a program designed to provide social, intellectual, and physical stimulation and support specifically for older adults with mild cognitive decline
    • Run by Arbor Company, which operates 45 senior communities in 11 states

    Overview

Unlike Beach House and The Collier, Barrington Terrace is farther from downtown Naples (a 25-minute drive) and Naples Pier, although it is close to the botanical garden, which is 8 miles away. This location makes the community best for those who don’t mind being a bit further from the city center. Barrington Terrace offers studios or one-bedroom assisted living units equipped with 24-hour emergency alert systems, and residents receive weekly housekeeping and linen service in addition to meals.

A smaller community than others on this list, Barrington Terrace provides space for residents to relax by themselves in cozy nooks throughout common areas and at the on-site library. Barrington Terrace welcomes pets, including dogs (ask your sales representative about any size or breed restrictions as well as extra fees), which are attractive elements for animal lovers. Activities include yoga, tai chi, live music, religious services, and barbecues. Visitors can join loved ones for meals with the purchase of a ticket. The community also provides regular transportation services for residents and on-site salon services, including manicures.

    FYI:

FYI: Are you checking out care options in other parts of Florida? Check out our guides to assisted living in Jacksonville and assisted living communities in Tampa.

Barrington Terrace has a full calendar of activities, but amenities are less varied and robust than communities such as Moorings Park at Grey Oaks. It’s also farther away from downtown, so it might be a better option if your loved one doesn’t have a lot of interest in trips to the theater, art galleries, or shopping. Although Barrington Terrace has an outdoor patio and some walking paths, in general, it offers fewer fitness opportunities, outdoor and indoor, compared to Moorings Park at Grey Oaks (No. 3 on our list) and Beach House (No. 1 on our list). The property is located by the Tamiami Trail E, a major road, so residents likely hear traffic noise outside.

The community has a good track record in working with families to individualize care based on their loved one’s condition and needs. Barrington Terrace also has enclosed outdoor areas where residents can enjoy fresh air in a safe environment that prevents wandering. It’s one reason it’s a strong option for people experiencing some cognitive impairment.

» Learn More: Dementia vs. Alzheimer’s disease

    Types of Care

Barrington Terrace offers assisted living, its Bridges Program (an in-between type of care for people with mild cognitive issues who don’t yet need memory care), and memory care. We like that Barrington Terrace offers guidance and detailed information about dementia care on its website and has won awards for its assisted living and memory care programs. Staff are trained in providing specialized care for residents with Parkinson’s disease, as well.

    Feedback and Reviews

Barrington Terrace might not have a lot of obvious frills, but the community has several positive online reviews from family members of residents, with many praising the medical care residents receive, the cleanliness of the property, and welcoming vibe of the community. Some wrote that employees knew them by name when they visited their loved ones and that the chefs seemed accommodating. One said the layout was easy to navigate and the community was less overwhelming than very large senior living communities.

A few online reviewers complained that Barrington Terrace is expensive and that the quality of care had declined over the years, writing that they appeared to have cut corners since the pandemic in terms of meal portions and activities offered. This reviewer also said that their loved one expressed concern about the health care they were receiving. Another review said their family member’s condition was not addressed in a timely fashion and the resident subsequently needed emergency medical care. Positive reviews regarding care outnumber the negative, however; one reviewer wrote that their family member required a lot of assistance with ADLs and Barrington appeared effective in addressing those needs.

    Highlights

    • Near some of the most highly rated golf courses in Florida
    • Guest suites
    • Pool
    • Technology help and resources for residents

    Overview

Brookdale North Naples is located in North Naples, a quiet and safe suburban part of Naples popular with both retirees and families. The community is a 15-minute drive to upscale shopping, such as the Waterside Shops with more than 60 high-end stores. It’s also close to the Mercato Shops, a shopping center with valet parking, restaurants, an Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, and community events as well as one of the only comedy clubs in the area. Residents can get transportation from the community to the free tram to Clam Pass Park, a popular white-sand Naples beach and coastal preserve. The park is a great spot to see native trees, including mangrove, Jamaican Dogwood, Cat’s Claw, and Bay Cedar.

» Dive Deeper: Brookdale Senior Living review

As an enormous company with more than 650 senior living communities nationwide, Brookdale is well established and has a good track record for providing consistent and reliable care. Many of their offerings – lecture series, fitness programs, and brain health programs, for example – are standardized across the communities. But it can be frustrating trying to figure out which amenities are offered at the particular location you’re interested in without speaking to someone on the phone or in person. Many links on a particular community’s page will take you back to Brookdale’s main website, so we’d recommend calling the North Naples location for specific details.

Brookdale North Naples is another pet-friendly community, like Barrington Terrace. Assisted living units are simple but include important safety features such as emergency alert systems. We’ve reviewed dozens of medical alert systems; we know just how important these life-saving devices can be after a fall or medical emergency, so we’re big fans of communities with alert systems in place. Common areas feature more stately decor, such as high ceilings, chandeliers, and fireplaces.

» Related Reading: Best medical alert systems in 2024

The property has an outdoor pool and therapy pool, and their B-Fit program offers a series of eight different classes including water fitness. Residents can also take dance, art, and fitness classes, play in the game room, and enjoy socializing at frequent happy hours. We love the variety of health and fitness activities offered, as they encourage residents to stay active and social as they age. In addition to scheduled transportation, this community provides parking space for residents with cars.

Like Beach House, Brookdale North Naples offers technology resources for seniors and support during virtual visits via Zoom and FaceTime with loved ones. Brookdale North Naples offers a range of assisted living layout options, from studio apartments to two-bedroom units (one-bedroom plus den) with two bathrooms, kitchens, and washer/dryers. It might be a solid option for couples in which one person can live independently with a partner who might need more assistance.

    Types of Care

Brookdale North Naples offers assisted living. Staff will do detailed assessments of your loved one’s health and care needs to create an individual care plan. Brookdale’s care plans are a la carte, so you only pay for needed assistance and care. Regular health monitoring includes fall-risk evaluation, nutrition-risk assessment, and medication management. Residents have access to a licensed nurse on-site, but this community doesn’t offer 24-hour nursing assistance. Staff is on hand 24-hours a day, however, in case of emergencies.

Although Brookdale North Naples is one of the least expensive options on our list, it only offers assisted living. So if residents eventually need memory care or skilled nursing, they will have to move to a different community. Staff will provide light assistance with ADLs after your loved one’s needs are assessed and a care plan is created for them.

Unlike some of the communities listed here with memory care and bridge programs, Brookdale North Naples might be more appropriate for independent older adults who can take advantage of the community’s activity and fitness options.

    Feedback and Reviews

Online reviews for Brookdale North Naples are generally positive, with some reviewers noting that they have loved ones who have lived in the community for years, and they’ve been satisfied with the care they received. Others had good things to say about the social atmosphere of the community and caring nature of the staff. One reviewer said they were unhappy with a large cost increase over the previous year’s rates, however, and another wrote that his relative was mishandled and accidentally injured by a staff member.

How to Find the Right Assisted Living Community for You

We do our best to provide you with the most comprehensive, up-to-date information about your options. But choosing an assisted living community in Naples, Florida that’s best for your loved one will depend on your family’s individual needs, tastes, and concerns. Here are some guidelines to consider when doing your own research:

  • Be sure to visit communities in person. It’s difficult to get an accurate picture of life in an assisted living community without seeing it firsthand. Spend some time in each community in person, and ask a lot of questions. You’ll want to know what the caregiver-to-resident ratio is, how often medical personnel are on-site, and how and how often residents’ care needs are evaluated.
  • Consider your loved one’s individual needs and tastes. An activity calendar packed with trips to ball games, bingo, and group fitness classes might not be attractive to someone who prefers quiet walks and painting or reading by themselves. Alternatively, a quieter community where residents keep to themselves probably won’t appeal to social butterflies. Be realistic when evaluating whether the culture of a community would be a good fit for your loved one.
  • Ask how communities transition residents if care needs increase. Some communities allow residents to age in place, meaning that residents can transition from, for example, independent or assisted living to memory care without moving to a new room or building. But some communities will require a move to a new wing or even a different community altogether if one can’t provide higher levels of care. It’s important to consider possible future health care needs in addition to present ones when choosing an assisted living community.
  • Location, location, location. As it is in real estate in general, location is an important consideration when choosing an assisted living facility. Consider hurricane preparedness and other elements that could affect whether your loved one will feel safe in the neighborhood a community is located in. Also, note how close hospitals and doctors’ offices are, and consider residents’ access to transportation; off-site amenities won’t be much use if your loved one can’t get to them.
  • Consider long-term costs. Make sure you understand how each community’s cost structure works – definitions and associated costs for help with ADLs and medical care are not standardized industry-wide and can vary. Additional care needs can significantly raise the monthly costs of assisted living, so be realistic about what you can afford if your loved one’s care needs increase. Be sure to ask about community fees (including whether and when they’re refundable and can be waived) in addition to basic care costs, which are often in addition to monthly rates.
