Known as the “city of cowboys and culture,” Fort Worth, Texas, is proud of its Western heritage, with twice-daily cattle drives and the world’s largest honky-tonk. Fort Worth spreads over five counties and is the 12th-largest city in the U.S.1 With its size comes big-city amenities such as thriving restaurant and live-music scenes, museums, a zoo, and shopping. Nature lovers can explore beautiful Lake Worth, a botanical garden, and Airfield Falls Conservation Park.

Compared with other large metropolitan areas, Fort Worth is a fairly affordable, diverse city, with a population of nearly 1 million people, 10 percent of whom are over the age of 65.2 Residents don’t pay income tax in Texas. That and the city’s mild winters might make it attractive to many retirees. Our Methodology: How We Chose the Best Assisted Living in Fort Worth

With all of the great assisted living options in Fort Worth, you might be wondering how we come up with our top picks. Our senior housing experts spent over 50 hours researching and compared the assisted living communities and narrowed down the list using the factors below.

  • Cost: The cost of assisted living in Fort Worth falls just below the national median assisted living cost. We took this into consideration and tried to find the best assisted living communities for a range of budgets. Any prices listed in this guide come from community websites or conversations with staff.
  • Available care: Having multiple levels of care available, such as assisted living and memory care, is an important consideration when choosing a senior living community. So, we pay particular attention to care services offered at each community.
  • Reviews: We read through dozens of reviews for each contender and include a summary of our findings. We consider the source. For example, does the reviewer have a loved one who has lived in the community a long time, or did the reviewer take a tour only? We also look for common themes to get an accurate picture of life in the community.
  • Amenities: Amenities can help an assisted living community feel like a luxury resort or a home away from home. No one wants to pay for perks they won’t use, so we do our best to give a clear snapshot of each community’s amenities.
  • Location: In a big metropolitan area such as Fort Worth, location is important. We consider whether a community is best for older adults who prefer an urban, suburban, or rural environment. That way, they can choose a community convenient to things they enjoy, whether it’s parks and lakes, shopping, or museums and theaters. We also take note of where hospitals and medical centers are in relation to each community.

    • Faith-forward community with Bible study and daily devotionals
    • Registered nurse available 24/7
    • Landscaped courtyards, garden, patios, and plant nursery
    • Variety of amenities and activities, like an art studio, movie theater, interest clubs, lectures, and local performances

    Overview

Located in the Eagle Ranch section of Fort Worth, Bristol Park at Eagle Mountain is just 10 minutes from Lake Worth and about a half-hour drive to downtown Fort Worth. This more suburban community has a homey feel, with high, wood-beamed ceilings; a large brick fireplace; and modern, cozy furnishings. There’s also a soda shop and full-service hair salon/barber shop on-site.

We appreciate Bristol Park at Eagle Mountain’s emphasis on safety features, such as emergency pull cords and safety pendants, 24-hour assistance when needed, and some safety features in bathrooms and kitchenettes. This community also offers ample opportunities for residents to stay fit, with a fitness center, health and wellness programs such as strength training and chair yoga, and pleasant outdoor walking areas. In addition to the landscaped courtyard and comfortable patio, this community has a garden and nursery that nature-loving residents can help tend.

Bristol Park hosts lectures and performances for residents, such as local musicians or children’s dance recitals. We love the variety this offers for entertainment! Bristol Park also organizes frequent off-site trips and lots of activities to keep residents engaged and social. Residents can join book clubs and Bible study to keep their minds stimulated, while those interested in the arts have an art studio and movie theater to enjoy.

Although many of this community’s assisted living apartments are sizable, at more than 500 square feet, the lack of a full kitchen might turn off some older adults who still want to cook meals or have friends or family cook for them when they visit. People whose faith or religion is important to them, however, might be a great fit for this community that hosts frequent Bible studies and daily devotionals.

    Types of Care

Bristol Park at Eagle Mountain offers independent living, assisted living, and memory care within a half-hour drive from several top area hospitals. The facility recently closed its short-term care program to focus on independent and assisted living.

We appreciate that Bristol Park at Eagle Mountain makes registered nurses available to residents, particularly because many online reviewers praised the skill and compassion of this community’s nursing team. There are also emergency response systems in residents’ rooms in case of a fall or other health emergency.

    Pro Tip:

Pro Tip: By law, assisted living facilities must provide an attendant 24/7 when residents are present, such as a home health aide, but not all have an overnight RN or LPN on duty or one on call. If nurse access is on your care agenda, make sure to ask during your search!3

    Feedback and Reviews

This community has some positive online reviews, but many were written by people who work there, not by residents or their loved ones. Comments about the food at this community were mixed. And one reviewer who said she was a private caregiver for a resident wrote she saw significant care issues that were frustrating to resolve with staff. Other reviewers reported problems communicating with staff and had some negative things to say about the level of care provided, particularly in memory care. Unfortunately, negative experiences can be more motivating for people to post reviews online, and it can be difficult to find care facilities without negative feedback.

Some reviewers wrote they were pleased with the care their loved ones received and the staff’s ability to engage residents. For example, one reviewer wrote that her mother can be difficult but said the staff managed to get her involved in community activities.

    • Thoughtful, modern design elements that enhance comfort and safety of residents
    • Pet-friendly community
    • Engagement app keeps family connected to residents
    • Close to Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital

    Overview

Founded in Virginia in 1981, Sunrise Senior Living brings the Dutch approach to aging to the U.S., with thoughtful design and safety features throughout the community. Sunrise uses universal design elements, such as lighting elements that reduce glare (which can help people with vision problems), subtle lean rails that blend into hallway walls, and chair cushions and armrests chosen to be more comfortable for older adults experiencing health challenges and mobility issues.

Sunrise also paid attention to transitions between flooring styles in different areas of the property to reduce disorientation and risk for falls. We love the little touches Sunrise has implemented to make residents feel at home, such as shadow boxes outside their apartments that they’re encouraged to personalize. Like Bristol Park at Eagle Mountain, Sunrise of Fort Worth features inviting common areas, such as the parlor with a grand piano and floor-to-ceiling windows that let in lots of natural light. An enclosed patio with ample shade lets residents enjoy the outdoors even when temperatures rise.

» Related Reading: A Guide to Fall Prevention

Sunrise at Fort Worth offers a range of accommodation options: Residents can choose a studio, one-bedroom, or two-bedroom apartment, or they can reduce the cost of room and board by sharing an apartment.

Sunrise at Fort Worth is a great choice for older adults interested in the arts or who enjoy being engaged in their communities. Like Bristol Park at Eagle Mountain, this facility brings in local professional musicians to perform concerts for guests. The community’s Live With Purpose enrichment program of activities suits a variety of interests, such as painting, yoga, singing, or volunteering.

One segment, Live With Learning, uses a series of brain exercises to strengthen long-term memory. There’s also a music program where residents can make their own music. In addition to scheduled community activities, there are tons of groups to join, such as a book club, poker club, and walking club.

Sunrise embraces modern technology as well as modern design, which helps streamline care and keeps loved ones connected with residents. The family engagement app, Smile for Senior Living, lets users share photos and videos, and it also allows residents and family to see menus and activity calendars. Loved ones can post notes for the activities coordinator.

    Types of Care

Sunrise at Fort Worth offers assisted living, memory care, skilled nursing through third-party providers, respite care, and hospice. We appreciate this continuum of care and that protocols are standardized across all Sunrise communities. Sunrise earned a Well Health-Safety Rating in 2023 for its commitment to cleaning and sanitation practices, emergency preparedness, and innovation in health services.

    >> Learn About: A Guide to Long-Term Care

Before new residents move in, a nurse visits them at home, in the hospital, or remotely, if necessary, to do a comprehensive assessment of their care needs. A registered nurse also visits residents on-site once a month. Training is standardized so employees follow specific protocols for care, such as with fall management. Staff are trained about how to help patients recover and make their environment safer.

We appreciate Sunrise’s holistic approach of incorporating fitness activities to improve strength and balance for residents at risk of falls. Another plus is Sunrise’s attention to detail in terms of care needs, such as letting residents keep their own pharmacies if they want to. Lastly, Sunrise at Fort Worth is very close to Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital should residents need hospital care.

    Feedback and Reviews

Sunshine of Fort Worth has garnered many positive reviews, with reviewers praising the kind and knowledgeable staff, good food, and competent care. One reviewer mentioned excellent and attentive care by the nurses who tended to her 95-year-old dad. A woman wrote that her mother felt welcomed by the staff and that the nurse and physician assistants were top-notch.

Others wrote they were impressed with the creative activity options and variety of dining. One reviewer said she looked at 15 facilities before choosing Sunrise at Fort Worth and that she was happy with her decision. Family members were satisfied overall with the level of care provided in memory care at Sunrise as well. One even wrote that her mother had such a warm experience living at Sunrise that the staff is like family now.

    Highlights

    • Pet-friendly community
    • On-site physical therapy available
    • Putting green
    • Busy activities calendar
    • Mobile app to keep loved ones connected

    Overview

The Grandview of Chisholm Trail is one of Civitas Senior Living’s 30+ communities, most of which are in Texas. Just 20 minutes from downtown Fort Worth, The Grandview is a five-minute drive to The Shops at Chisholm Trail Ranch and less than 15 minutes to the Hulen Mall. It’s also a short drive to several interesting attractions, such as the Fort Worth Museum of Science and Natural History, Fort Worth Botanic Garden, Fort Worth Water Gardens, and the Sid Richardson Museum of Wild West paintings.

Assisted living options include studio, one-bedroom, one-bedroom deluxe, and two-bedroom (some with patio access) apartments. Memory care is located in a dedicated wing of the building, with balconies, an enclosed courtyard, and gated outdoor patio.

The Grandview offers many amenities typical in higher-end assisted living, such as a coffee bar/bistro, hair salon, library and business center, scheduled transportation, and a particularly nice fitness center. Residents can meet with physical therapists on-site as well.

» Learn More: Luxury Senior Living

The Grandview of Chisholm Trail is a newer facility that embraces technology, much like Sunrise at Fort Worth. Loved ones can stay in the loop about care and activities via a mobile app called Sagely.

We appreciate The Grandview’s innovative dining program, which considers resident input about the community’s signature dish, special birthday meals, themed dinners, and cooking demonstrations. Friends and family are sometimes invited to attend recipe tastings. Culinary team also offers “seasonal sips,” such as a pumpkin-spiced chai in the fall. The facility uses MINDful Menu, a meal program developed by nutritionists at Rush University Medical Center to aid cognitive function and brain health.

Like Sunrise at Fort Worth, this community’s dining room has lots of natural light and more resembles a country club dining room than a cafeteria. There’s also a private dining room for special occasions with family or friends. The activities director connects residents with volunteer opportunities in the community, which is a great way for older adults to stay active and reduce the risk of depression.

» Useful Resource: Physical Therapy for Seniors

Residents can participate in a wide variety of activities and clubs, such as art classes, yoga and meditation, movie screenings, and games. The activity schedule is packed with happy hours, tea socials, and hot cocoa gatherings by the fireplace. For residents who want to stay active, there are plenty of group fitness offerings, such as tai chi and chair yoga.

Like Bristol Park at Eagle Mountain, The Grandview of Chisholm Trail schedules religious services and faith-based activities, such as prayer circles, praying the rosary, and Bible study, making it a good choice for faith-focused older adults.

There are a few grassy outdoor areas, including a putting green, and interior courtyards with water features. But the area around The Grandview of Chisholm Trail is flat and treeless, so it might not appeal to older adults who would prefer grounds with lots of trees and gardens to walk in. Gardening and outdoor enthusiasts might be more attracted to the outdoor areas of Bristol Park at Eagle Mountain.

Still, The Grandview of Chisholm Trail’s proximity to restaurants, shopping, and cultural attractions make it a good option for older adults who like getting out and about in the community.

    Types of Care

The Grandview of Chisholm Trail offers assisted living and memory care. Like Bristol Park at Eagle Mountain, this community does not offer skilled nursing. So, residents who need a high level of care in the future may need to move to a different facility.

The Grandview has regularly scheduled Care Conferences, in which residents, families, and care managers reevaluate care needs and make any necessary changes to the resident’s service agreement. We’re big fans of The Grandview’s unique Dementia Live simulation that helps educate loved ones about what life is like for residents with dementia.

Civitas uses a Point-of-Care task sheet system to keep track of care and assistance performed by staff so that care stays consistent across shift changes. Residents can also see physical therapists on-site rather than having to leave the community for PT appointments.

    Feedback and Reviews

Many reviewers wrote that The Grandview is clean, welcoming, and conveniently located, and provides residents with excellent care. One reviewer expressed appreciation for the creativity and attention to detail in a memory care activity program. Another reviewer who wrote that she is a visiting nurse said that the staff stood out as caring, compared with other communities she has worked in.

Some of this community’s negative reviews make some serious allegations of neglect, however. One reviewer claimed an allegedly abusive family member had been able to visit her aunt even though the community had been advised not to admit this person. Another claimed that a loved one who had to be hospitalized was not allowed to return after hospital staff referred a social worker to the hospitalized resident.

    • Assisted living and memory care
    • Pet-friendly facility
    • Hillside views
    • Variety of activities and amenities
    • Close to downtown Fort Worth, Ridglea Country Club, and many hospitals

    Overview

The Ridglea Senior Living is another Civitas Senior Living community, so it has many of the same design (think super-high ceilings, lots of artwork, and cozy furnishings) and programs as The Grandview of Chisholm Trail. On the west side of Fort Worth, between Ridglea Hills and the Como area in Fort Worth, The Ridglea was built on a hillside and boasts sweeping views from many apartments. It’s closer to downtown Fort Worth than The Grandview of Chisholm Trail and a few minutes’ drive to Ridglea Country Club, Sprouts Farmers’ Market, and Trinity Trails River Park.

Opened in 2018, The Ridglea has the modern opulence of a high-end hotel or country club. Like Sunrise at Fort Worth, The Ridglea designed its hallways with subtle grab bars of sorts; these bars blend into the design while providing a safety feature to help prevent falls. The bathrooms in the community were designed to maximize comfort and mobility, with bars and walk-in showers. Kitchenette sinks are also wheelchair accessible (although we wish we could say the same about the cabinets above the sinks).

Assisted living residents can choose from studio, studio deluxe, one-bedroom, one-bedroom deluxe, and two-bedroom apartments. The Ridglea offers interior courtyards with grass and water features, a private dining room, a bistro cafe with snacks available all day, and a well-equipped fitness room. Family and friends can stay on top of community activities and residents’ care with the Sagely app. The Ridglea has many of the same activities as The Grandview of Chisholm Trail, such as tai chi, Bible study, movies, art classes, afternoon tea, and hot cocoa socials.

» Related Reading: Best Workouts and Exercises for Seniors

The Ridglea Senior Living seems to take pride in its residents, highlighting veterans’ military service in common areas by displaying residents’ photos and medals. The community also points out in marketing materials that many residents were pillars in the Fort Worth business community and in charitable organizations.

The Ridglea is a good option for seniors looking for a lively community with a lot of activities and social events. Civitas communities sometimes have resident pets, so it might not be best for older adults who are allergic or don’t like dogs and cats. It’s also one of the pricier options on our list, so it’s best for those with a larger budget.

    Types of Care

The Ridglea offers assisted living and memory care, along with on-site physical therapy in a pleasant fitness room. Like The Grandview, dining rooms serve the MINDful Menu to help keep cognition sharp.

»Learn More: What Is Memory Care?

Assisted living residents have weekly housekeeping service and assistance with activities of daily living (ADLs) as necessary, including help with bathing, dressing, grooming, and incontinence. Personalized care plans might also include medication management. Apartments are equipped with emergency response systems as well. Because a senior falls every second in the U.S.4, we appreciate when communities offer these medical alert features.

This facility has well-established memory care programs, including sensory programs, exercises to keep residents in touch with their lifelong passions, and aromatherapy. Residents wear emergency pendants, and memory care residents, who live in an area called The Cottage, enjoy a safe and pleasant inner courtyard. Importantly, The Ridglea prioritizes a high caregiver-to-resident ratio for its residents with dementia. Texas licensing requirements for assisted living require some training in dementia care, at a minimum, but The Ridglea became certified by the National Council of Certified Dementia Practitioners in November 2023.

    Did You Know?

Did You Know? In Texas, assisted living licensing requires that staff members complete four hours of dementia-specific orientation training before working and must be supervised during their first 16 hours of work in an assisted living facility.5

The Ridglea is less than 15 minutes from several highly regarded hospitals, including Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Southwest Fort Worth and Medical City Fort Worth.

    Feedback and Reviews

Reviews mention that common areas and apartments are modern and clean, and that the staff seems caring and friendly. One reviewer said that staff turnover seemed high and that the food wasn’t great. Other reviewers spoke highly of the food, however, and said they liked that the residents were able to help shape community menus and seasonal offerings.

One criticism that crops up often is that the staff seems difficult to reach by phone. Some reviewers said that phone calls can go unanswered and voicemail boxes are sometimes full. One person wrote that staff at The Ridglea doesn’t seem very proactive in alerting families to residents’ changes in behavior or health needs, but this wasn’t a common theme.

    • Indoor pool, spa, and fitness center
    • Watermark University continued learning
    • Tech-savvy community with online engagement platform and an EngageVR virtual reality program
    • Greenhouse and gardening

    Overview

Less than 20 minutes southwest of downtown Fort Worth, The Watermark at Broadway Cityview is a quick drive to many Fort Worth attractions, including museums, restaurants, river trails, and shopping. This community offers independent living, assisted living, and short-term stays.

Independent living apartments at The Watermark can be quite large, but assisted living apartments are all studios under 500 square feet. Although small, they’re a more affordable option than others on our list, such as The Ridglea or Legend of Fort Worth.

We appreciate that resident ambassadors make sure new residents feel welcome and that their needs and questions are addressed. And although the schedule of activities isn’t as jam-packed as other communities on our list, such as The Ridglea and Sunrise at Fort Worth, there are plenty of ways residents can stimulate their minds and connect with their fellow residents. The Watermark at Broadway Cityview has Sunday worship services, guided meditation, chair exercise classes, games like trivia and cornhole, and singalongs. One of this community’s signature programs, Watermark University, offers numerous ways for residents to engage in brain-stimulating activities, such as painting, flower arranging, ballroom dancing, and sculpting.

» Related Reading: Faith-Based Senior Care and Assisted Living

Residents can enjoy al fresco dining, pool aerobics, and gardening in the greenhouse. The community is surrounded by trees and grass, a tranquil suburban setting that might appeal to nature lovers. The Watermark also has a hair salon, spa, and fitness center.

We love that The Watermark connects residents with Engage VR, a virtual reality program. This technology can open, or reopen, new worlds for residents to enjoy — such as deep sea exploration, swimming with dolphins, taking an African safari, or even visiting their childhood home. It’s a great way to stimulate the mind and share experiences, particularly for people experiencing mobility or health issues that make real-life travel difficult.

The Watermark at Broadway Cityview offers LifeLoop, an online communications and engagement platform so residents can stay on top of community announcements, transportation schedules, and classes at Watermark University. The platform lets residents and loved ones exchange messages, photos, and videos — perfect for staying connected.

    Types of Care

The Watermark at Broadway Cityview offers independent, assisted living, and short-term stays. Light assistance with ADLs, such as medication management and bathing, are provided as needed. The community also has a nice physical rehabilitation facility and fitness room equipped with modern equipment. Residents can keep fit with water aerobics and strength-training classes if they enjoy being in the pool. Rehabilitation services are available, along with the option to check out the community by booking a short-term stay.

Residents have plenty of access to nearby medical facilities, as the community is just a three-minute drive to Kindred Hospital Tarrant County – Fort Worth Southwest and Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Southwest Fort Worth. It’s also about 15 minutes to Medical City Fort Worth.

One important thing to note: The community doesn’t offer a continuum of care. If you anticipate needing a higher level of care, such as memory care or skilled nursing care, you may want to consider a different facility.

» Compare Your Options: Assisted Living vs. Skilled Nursing

    Feedback and Reviews

Reviews of The Watermark of Broadway Cityview are mixed. Some reviewers praise the caring and competent staff, while others wrote that care in rehab was inadequate and assisted living residents weren’t receiving assistance with ADLs in a timely manner. People writing reviews of short-term rehabilitation services noted that some staff were dedicated to helping residents while others seemed disinterested in providing quality care. A few reviewers mentioned that the community is large and that hallways are very long, which could be something to keep in mind if you or your loved one has some trouble getting around.

    Highlights

    • Assisted living and memory care
    • Game room with basketball arcade and foosball (open to residents’ guests)
    • Innovative safety features built into environment
    • Companion care services available
    • Educational seminars

    Overview

Legend of Fort Worth is part of Wichita, Kansas-based Legend Senior Living, a company with 55 properties throughout the U.S. Just off I-35W in the Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) metroplex, this community is near the quiet Arcadia Park Estates area in north Fort Worth.

Unlike The Watermark at Broadway Cityview, Legend of Fort Worth isn’t close to many shopping options or other attractions, but we appreciate the variety of amenities it offers. These include a state-of-the-art media center and informational seminars about topics like preserving your financial legacy, learning about VA Aid & Attendance benefits, and living with dementia (a seminar open to family members).

Much like Sunrise of Fort Worth, Legend of Fort Worth’s attention to detail in designing spaces that maximize safety and ease of mobility for older adults stand out to us. The community chose low-pile carpeting, lighting that reduces glare, and muted colors that enhance calm and reduce overstimulation. There are also floor-to-ceiling windows throughout that bathe interior spaces with natural light.

The facility offers many amenities typically found in higher-end assisted living, such as a bistro, salon and spa, a post office area, scheduled transportation, and landscaped courtyards. Residents can choose items from a menu at meal times, as if in a restaurant. We also like Legend’s regular schedule of educational programs, cultural and themed events, religious services, and fitness activities such as chair aerobics and classes to improve balance and ease arthritis pain. Residents can join a walking club to enjoy fresh air and camaraderie while getting some cardio exercise.

    » Useful Resource: Senior Safety

Another plus of Legend of Fort Worth is that it offers eight floor plans in a range of assisted living apartment sizes, ranging from 388 to 810 square feet. Memory care floor plans feature four different studio layouts. Note that apartments have kitchenettes with microwaves but not full kitchens, so Legend of Fort Worth might not be the best choice for those who enjoy cooking and want to continue making their own meals.

This community is a little pricier than other options on our list, so it’s best for older adults with some wiggle room in their budgets. The larger apartment sizes, along with the educational programs Legend of Fort Worth offers, might make it worth the cost for many seniors.

    Types of Care

Legend of Fort Worth offers assisted living and memory care. In addition to having associates on call 24/7, licensed nurses are on staff. If needed, associates help residents with medication management bathing, dressing, toileting, and transferring.

Apartments are equipped with emergency call systems, and residents can opt to wear water-resistant emergency pendants that can connect them to 24-hour assistance. The community also has large bathrooms with walk-in showers and night lights to reduce risk of falls at night.

    » Read More: Companion Care

A notable feature of Legend of Fort Worth’s care program is its companion care services, which are available at an additional cost. Companions check in with residents to ensure their safety, comfort, and happiness by doing things such as encouraging conversation and participation in activities, helping with correspondence, assisting with walking or transfers, shopping, and additional housekeeping. This program can make it easier for loved ones to ensure residents are comfortable and living their lives to the fullest.

Legend of Fort Worth is less than a half-mile from Medical City Alliance and a short drive to Baylor Scott & White Emergency Hospital, Medical City North Hills, and Medical City Fort Worth.

    Feedback and Reviews

Legend at Fort Worth online reviews are mixed. Many reviewers praise the quality of care and the frequent activities and trips. A few mentioned that the staff seemed to have worked at the community a long time, which is a sign of a well-run community. Other reviewers said that the food is good and the facility seems clean and comfortable.

One reviewer was very unhappy with the care her grandmother received in memory care, however. Another reviewer said Legend employees made a lot of excuses about what he felt was neglectful care of his mother. It’s important to consider negative reviews, but remember that all facilities have at least a few negative comments. For that reason, it’s best to consider common themes within reviews.

How to Find the Right Assisted Living Community for You

We spent hours researching the best assisted living communities in Fort Worth, but that doesn’t mean that all of the communities on our list would be the right choice for you. Here are a few things to consider when comparing communities:

  • Identify your needs. One community may offer different types of care than others. Prices can also vary based on the level of care that you need. That is why it’s important to speak with your health provider and evaluate your needs. You may not require a lot of help now, but what about five years from now? Try to figure out what kind of assistance you need today and anticipate potential changes in the future as best you can.
  • Review your budget. Be diligent in reviewing your budget, and understand exactly how much each community charges before making a choice. While analyzing your budget, remember Medicare doesn’t cover assisted living in most cases. Many seniors depend on Social Security benefits, retirement savings, and long-term care insurance to cover costs.
  • Read reviews. Reading reviews from caregivers, family members, and residents can help you gauge the pros and cons of each community. Don’t take every review at face value, but consider online reviews in your research of each community.
  • Visit communities. Always visit a community before you agree to move in! Seeing an assisted living facility in person is important to help you figure out how you would feel living there. Be sure to talk with residents, staff, and administrators, and don’t be afraid to ask a lot of questions. Also make sure that care options you’re interested in — such as on-site physical therapy and respite care — are available in the particular location you’re considering. Some features or amenities on companies’ main websites might not be available at every location, so ask during those visits.
  • Check licensing and certifications. While researching a community, check that it has up-to-date licensing and certifications. For some information about assisted living regulations and resources in Texas, check out the Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services assisted living facility information pamphlet.
  • Trust your gut. At some point, you will probably find more than one community you like. If you’re struggling to make a decision, trust your instincts. Many facilities may seem similar on the surface, so listening to your gut can help you steer you toward the best community.
  • Carefully review your contract and care plans. Make sure you understand how residents’ health care needs are evaluated. Also note things such as whether community fees are refundable, how rental fee increases are determined, and what the process is for moving residents out of the facility, if you want or need to down the road.
