Springfield is the third-largest city in Missouri, and it balances the perks of a big city with the charm and lifestyle of a small town. Boasting a population of just over 170,000, Springfield has a relatively high number of seniors, with roughly 27,000 residents ages 65 or over.1 Springfield has over two dozen assisted living communities to accommodate older adults who need help with activities of daily living (ADLs) such as bathing, dressing, and eating.

We’ve compiled a list of Springfield’s best assisted living communities. Continue reading to see which community may be the right choice for you.

Our Methodology: How We Chose the Best Assisted Living in Springfield

Springfield has dozens of senior communities, so narrowing down the top contenders requires careful research and consideration of the most important factors for seniors and their families. We spent over 50 hours researching and comparing Springfield communities using the following critera.

  • Cost: The cost of assisted living in Springfield is low compared to the cost of living in many other major cities. We try to balance cost with overall value when selecting the best assisted living communities.
  • Available care: Some communities in Springfield offer only ADL support and not much else. We try to include communities that offer additional lifestyle and care options, such as medication management, independent living, and memory care.
  • Reviews: We read through hundreds of reviews to find out what real people are saying about communities throughout Springfield, so we can focus on the communities that receive the most positive feedback.
  • Amenities: Amenities are an important part of senior care since they can enrich residents’ lives. We focus our research on assisted living communities that offer multiple life-enrichment amenities.
  • Location: Most assisted living communities in Springfield are clustered around the southern and eastern edges of the city, but we try to include a mix of locations to accommodate seniors who want to live close to the city center or in the outer suburbs.
  • Staff size: We highlighted assisted living communities that offer high staff-to-resident ratios, often with a maximum of eight residents per caregiver.

How to Find the Right Assisted Living Community for You

We want to provide you with the best assisted living communities in Springfield, but it’s also important to research on your own. Your needs and preferences will differ from others, so you should consider the topics below to make your search easier.

  • Identify your needs: Do you have difficulty getting in and out of the shower? Do you sometimes forget to take your medications? Are you finding it increasingly difficult to handle chores and daily tasks around the house? Identifying and evaluating your specific needs is the first step toward finding a community that can provide the care you require.
  • Review your budget: Springfield is a pretty affordable place to live, but you should still analyze your budget before moving into assisted living. In most cases, Medicare doesn’t cover assisted living, and many seniors depend on Social Security benefits, retirement savings, and long-term care insurance to cover costs.
  • Read reviews: Reviews often provide specific details about an assisted living community. A review may teach you that one community has a great game room, for example, while another may discuss the pros and cons of daily life there.
  • Visit communities: Visiting an assisted living community is the best way to get a feel for the property, staff, and quality of care. You should always visit a community before you commit, and use the opportunity to ask questions and talk with staff and residents.
  • Check licensing and certifications: While researching a community, check that it has up-to-date licensing and certifications to operate in Missouri.
  • Trust your gut: If you’re struggling to make a decision, trust your gut! Choosing an assisted living community can be tough, especially with so many good options available. Ultimately, your intuition can help you pick the community that suits you the best.

What Is Living in Springfield Like for Seniors?

Springfield may seem a little off the beaten path to seniors accustomed to bigger cities such as Kansas City or St. Louis, while it may feel overwhelming for people more used to rural life. If you’re somewhere in the middle, it could be just right! Here’s a quick look at life in Springfield for older adults.

  • Climate: Springfield has a relatively mild climate, with warm, humid summers and cold winters. You can expect more than 200 days of sunshine per year, but Springfield also gets its fair share of precipitation.
  • Health care: Springfield has dozens of quality clinics and hospitals. Mercy Hospital is among the best health-care providers in the region.
  • Cost of living: Missouri is among the most affordable states in the country, and Springfield has a cost of living that is roughly 13 percent below the national average. Housing, groceries, and utilities are all pretty affordable compared to similarly sized cities in the region.3
  • Walkability: Springfield is not a very walkable city, especially if you live in the outer suburbs, where most assisted living communities are located. The city does, however, have walkable areas near the city center, as well as several public bus routes.
  • Activities: Springfield is a great city for seniors who enjoy a quiet life. Some popular activities and attractions include museums, golf courses, shopping, fine dining, and public parks. It is a great city for history buffs and nature lovers since it has nearby historical sites and nature paths.
  • Safety: Springfield is a relatively safe city for people of all ages. Certain neighborhoods are more dangerous than others, but most areas in and around the city have low crime rates.
  • Tax structure: Missouri has income tax rates that range between 2 and 5 percent, which is lower than many other states. The state doesn’t have inheritance or estate taxes, which could have a positive impact on your estate planning.4

How Much Does Assisted Living Cost in Springfield, Missouri?

According to Genworth, the estimated median cost of an assisted living community in Springfield is $5,245 per month in 2024. That’s nearly 5 percent lower than the national median of $5,511.5

Springfield offers low-cost assisted living and senior care compared to most other cities in the region. Remember that the community’s location and the level of care you require can impact your costs. Memory care, for example, tends to be far more expensive than assisted living since it requires more intensive care.
