Before searching for Sierra Vista assisted living options, see what this Arizona city surrounded by mountains has to offer.
Sitting 75 miles southeast of Tucson, Sierra Vista got its start as Fort Huachuca in 1877 when the U.S. Cavalry built a camp to protect settlers from Apache raiding parties. The community built around the fort didn’t settle on the name Sierra Vista until 1956. Today, Fort Huachuca is home to roughly 14,000 soldiers and their family members.
Sierra Vista is bordered by the following natural boundaries: Huachuca Mountains, Dragoon Mountains, Whetstone Mountains, Mustang Mountains, Mule Mountains and the San Pedro River.
These provide natural habitats for many species of wildlife, particularly the hummingbird. Sierra Vista is known as “The Hummingbird Capital of the U.S.” because of the some two dozen species found here. In addition, there are 150 other species of birds found in the area. The Huachuca Audubon Society regularly makes field trips to birding locations such as the San Pedro River.
The landscape also provides lots of opportunities to hike. The Friends of the San Pedro River schedule walks and historic tours of areas such as the San Pedro Riparian National Conservation Area. Another popular outdoor area is the Coronado National Forest. Sierra Vista itself has 20 miles of multi-use paths criss-crossing the city.
Among the local performing arts venues are the Buena Performing Arts Center, Illegitimate Theater, Limelight Productions, and the Sierra Vista Ballet.
Around the Sierra Vista area is what’s known as “Napa-zona”—Southeast Arizona’s wine-producing country with 16 wineries and another dozen projected in the near future.
Sierra Vista’s overall cost of living is 2% above the national average. A one-bedroom in a Sierra Vista assisted living facility averages $3,100 a month, according to a recent Genworth Financial survey. A private room in a nursing home averages $183 a day while a semi-private averages $166. Home health aide services average $44,616 a year based on a 44-hour workweek.
