Lubbock offers a number of assisted living facilities for seniors and the elderly. Assisted living provides security, a favorable quality of life, and peace of mind for those who still enjoy independence but need a little help with activities of everyday daily living. Services provided by assisted living facilities include meals, transportation, housekeeping, and help with the management of medications. Attendants are on-site around the clock, and medical alert devices are easily accessible in the event of an emergency or unanticipated health problem.

Assisted living facilities, or ALFs, differ from nursing homes primarily in their level of care. While nursing homes are best for those who require constant, professional medical monitoring, ALF’s cater to residents who have fewer, less serious health problems. Beyond the common complaints that accompany aging, the tenant in assisted living can function safely and successfully on his or her own most of the time; therefore, he typically enjoys greater freedom to come and go–and more privacy, if he desires it–than he would in a nursing home.

There is a wide assortment of living arrangements from which to choose. Some facilities are designed like apartment complexes; others more closely resemble hotels. For a husband and wife who need differing degrees of care, there are facilities which adjoin a nursing home, or which are equipped for nursing care as well.

ALFs have also gained popularity by providing opportunities for social interaction–life after retirement can be a lot of fun! Depending on their size and resources, many offer the kind of activities that their residents enjoyed in independent living, such as book clubs, organized games, movies, and dances.

Lubbock, Texas–known as "The Hub of the Plains," or "The Hub City"–is a terrific destination for outings and sightseeing. Birthplace of the rock-and-roll pioneer Buddy Holly, the town of just over 230,000 boasts rich historical, cultural and geographical significance. Museums include The Buddy Holly Center, The Tubbs-Carlisle House and The National Ranching Heritage Center. The Cactus Theater, built in the Art Deco tradition in 1938, is a quaint venue for live music and plays. For sports fans, it just doesn’t get more thrilling or competitive than Texas Tech University football. Golfers will enjoy the The Rawls Course, owned and operated by Tech and ranked among the nation’s best. Beautiful scenery surrounds the city; Lubbock rests in the center of the Llano Escatado ("Staked Plain"), and is a two-hour drive from Caprock Canyons State Park. Several premiere wineries have opened in the region in recent years. And by all accounts, the citizens of Lubbock are among the friendliest in the country!

The cost of assisted living in Lubbock is less than the Texas average, and the state as a whole was very close to the national average. According to industry sources, a one-bedroom accommodation in Lubbock costs $3000 per month (by comparison, a private room in a nursing home costs $5323). Over the course of a year, Lubbock assisted living residents spend around $4000 less than is typical for the state as a whole.
