If you’re looking for the lowest price, I’d recommend purchasing your hearing aids upfront. With your one-time purchase, you receive free shipping, a 45-day risk-free trial, a one-year warranty, a hearing aid accessories kit, and video and voice support.

However, if you’d rather not fork over the money upfront, Lexie’s 24-month subscription is an option to explore. There aren’t any long-term contracts, so you can cancel your subscription anytime with no problem! Lexie’s payment plans have a one-time start-up payment (ranging from $149 to $249, depending on the model). Keep your budget in check by factoring these fees into your overall cost.

So what are the perks of the subscription versus paying up front? In addition to all that comes with a one-time purchase, you’ll receive care kits with enough hearing aid accessories (like domes, brushes to clean your hearing aids, and wax guards) for 24 months. Lexie’s payment plan also comes with a protection plan for damaged or lost hearing aids, which is a big perk.

How to Purchase Lexie Hearing Aids

Lexie makes it easy to purchase a pair of its hearing aids. Unlike other providers I’ve reviewed, such as Phonak, that require you to purchase hearing aids in person from a local provider, Lexie sells its hearing aids directly to consumers. Here’s how to get yourself a pair:

1. Visit Lexie Hearing’s website and select “Shop Now.”
2. Review the three options and select the model you want.
3. Select either the one-time payment or monthly option.
4. If you are purchasing the Lumen model, choose the hearing aid color you like: gray, beige, bronze, silver, or black.
5. Click “Continue” to proceed to checkout.
6. Enter your name, address, and shipping information.
7. Choose from standard (four to six days), priority (two or three days), or expedited priority (one or two days) shipping.
8. Enter your payment information and finalize your order.

If you’re not comfortable purchasing your hearing aids online, it’s easy to place your order over the phone with a Lexie representative. Lexie hearing aids are now found in 11,000 pharmacy and retail locations nationwide, including select Walgreens, Walmart Vision Center, CVS, and Best Buy locations.

Lexie sent me a sample pair of its battery-powered Lumen hearing aids so that I could test out the products for myself. The package is well designed and contains everything you need to get the hearing aids fitted correctly and set up. I liked the compact, minimal packaging and very clear instructions. Lumen hearing aids come in five color options, including gray and metallic black; I chose the bronze ones.

The devices themselves are a “slim tube” BTE style with a solid feel and what appears to be excellent build quality. The package comes with several sizes of tubes and domes, as well as an ear-measuring guide to help you select the correct tube length. The hearing aids are a bit larger than some on the market, but given the solid construction and features — including the telecoil, Bluetooth, and remote mic capability (more on that later) — the trade-off is well worth it.

Lexie also sent a pair of rechargeable Lexie B2 Powered by Bose hearing aids. These are self-fitting over-the-counter hearing aids. Like the Lexie Lumen, this pair came with everything you need to get them fitted and set up: different-size domes, a fitting tool, a charging cable, a cleaning brush, and a rechargeable case. The only thing missing was a wall charger, so you’ll need to purchase one if you don’t already have one for charging your cell phone or tablet.

The Lexie B2 is similar in style to the Lexie Lumen, but it’s available only in gray. The devices are so discreet, however, that you’ll hardly notice the color, even if your hair hasn’t started graying yet. They also function differently. Instead of a BTE model like the Lexie Lumen, the B2 is a receiver-in-canal (RIC) hearing aid. That makes it better suited for people with mild to moderate hearing loss.

The Setup and Hearing Test Process

The first thing I did was download the Lexie mobile app from Google Play (it’s also available in the Apple App Store). The app is easy to navigate and includes a self-hearing test for Lexie Lumen users.

The whole process takes less than 10 minutes, so it’s a breeze.

One of the things I really like about Lexie is that its default programs include a background noise setting as well as a telecoil. Telecoils provide great access to many public venues that have hearing loops. Unfortunately, many traditional hearing aids are forgoing telecoils in favor of Bluetooth. As a longtime hearing loop advocate, I give Lexie extra points for the telecoil.

Another thing that caught my eye in the program list was the companion mic. Many people with hearing loss have more difficulty hearing in background noise than hearing aids alone can handle. The fact that Lexie offers a remote microphone at a very reasonable price ($129) means that people on a tight budget can access effective hearing aid accessories that are usually out of reach in lower-priced hearing aids.

Adjusting Your Lexie Lumen Hearing Aids

After the initial setup, the Lexie app makes it very simple to manage your hearing aids.

From the screen above, you can go back to the previous setting (under “expert adjustments”) based on your hearing test results. This can be helpful if you have fluctuating hearing loss or just want to double-check your results.

Once set up, the Lexie app provides a really nice and easy home screen that allows you to adjust your hearing aids, manage the rewards program, and even get live assistance.

The Setup Process

When you open the Lexie B2 hearing aid box, you’ll find a simple three-step instruction sheet to help you get started. I liked that I didn’t have to read through a booklet or search around online for answers.

One step that’s missing, however, is giving the hearing aids a good charge. Mine didn’t arrive with enough charge to complete the setup, so I recommend charging them for a bit before you start. The website says a three-hour charge will power the hearing aids for up to 18 hours.1 To charge, just put the devices in their charging case, plug the included charging cable into the case, and plug the other end into a USB outlet or USB wall charging block (not included).

Once they’re charged, you can get started with Lexie’s three steps.

First, you’ll need to download the Lexie app from the Google Play Store or the App Store.

You’ll then need to power on the hearing aids by pressing the bottom button on each one. Don’t worry if you can’t tell whether they turned on. The app will confirm if they’re powered on.

Open the app and follow the on-screen directions. Make sure you select the right model of hearing aids. The in-app instructions and features for the Lexie B2 look different than those for the Lexie Lumen hearing aids.

Lexie suggests connecting your hearing aids via the Lexie App and not through your phone’s Bluetooth settings. I definitely suggest following the company’s recommendation. It makes setting up your B2 hearing aids a lot easier.

Start by choosing which product you’ve purchased, and then learn how to connect them to your phone.

The in-app setup tutorial covers everything you need to know about the B2 hearing aids, including how to use the app, fit your devices properly, and charge and care for them. I really appreciated the helpful hints it gave for people who wear glasses and first-time hearing aid users. Thinking back to when I was professionally fitted for hearing aids in an audiologist’s office, the process was extremely similar. With Lexie, you have the convenience (and savings) of doing it at home. You also have many dome sizes to test, so it’s easy to find one that fits well and feels right.

Along the way, you can request live help from a Lexie expert. I found the whole process so easy and fast that I didn’t need help, but it’s nice to know it’s there if you need it!

Adjusting Lexie B2 Hearing Aids

Lexie B2 hearing aids are self-fitting, which means you don’t take a hearing test and the hearing aids don’t automatically adjust to your hearing needs. Lexie hearing aids, therefore, are only for adults with mild to moderate hearing loss. People with more complicated or severe hearing loss should consider another provider, such as Oticon or Phonak.

To adjust Lexie B2 hearing aids, you can choose from some preset environment settings or save your own. You can also adjust treble, bass, and volume settings.

Lexie also lets you choose what sounds you want to hear with directionality settings. I tested the Everywhere and Front settings at home, and I was really impressed with the differences!

I turned on the Front setting and had my husband stand behind me and talk. I could barely hear a thing! Then I switched to Everywhere mode, and I could easily hear what he was saying. We repeated the test with him sitting across from me at the dining room table. I could hear him fine with both settings, but the Front setting made his voice a lot clearer by blocking out other background sounds, which is exactly what it’s supposed to do. Front mode would be great to use when you’re eating in a busy restaurant or having a one-on-one conversation.

Overall, I give Lexie high marks for an over-the-counter provider. With three hearing aid models available, customers have the flexibility to choose the features, technology, and price point that work best for their hearing health and budget. At $799 to $999 per pair, Lexie’s hearing aids are an affordable, high-quality option for new hearing aid users. For comparison, MDHearingAid’s prices start at $297 per pair (after discounts) for its basic BTE devices and range up to $699.98 for its top-of-the-line model. One drawback is that Lexie hearing aids are Bluetooth-enabled but do not stream music or take calls.
