Importance of Connecting with Loved Ones
In today’s world, loneliness has become a silent epidemic. In fact, The World Health Organization says, “social isolation and loneliness are increasingly being recognised as a priority public health problem.”
Older adults can be at higher risk for loneliness with 41 % of seniors 66 and older reporting feeling lonely. And 1 in 4 older people experience social isolation.
The effects of loneliness span not just mental health concerns, but real physical threats, too. Those experiencing loneliness are at much higher risk of depression, anxiety, dementia, strokes, heart attacks, and other chronic health concerns.
Social connection is crucial for mental and physical health, especially in older adults. Through social connection, we can improve longevity. Studies show that socializing in older adults improves cognitive function, well-being, and overall health.
