The Assisted Living Federation of America states that there are a variety of trends in the American aging population contributing to the growth of assisted living facilities and the industry. These include:
A. The American population is aging dramatically, increasing in the number of persons aged 75 and beyond. There are approximately 6.5 million people needing assistance with daily living activities. It is expected that by the year 2020, the numbers of elderly Americans will double.
B. As the number of elderly citizens who live alone increases, it is a general fact that women have longer lifespans than do men. There is a suggested factor that as men and women age, it is more likely that they will live alone. Other socio-economic factors factors, including increase in divorce rates growing numbers of people who are single by choice, also are incorporated into this trend.
C. Traditionally the primary caregivers of the aging were women. Current trends indicate that women are now in larger numbers in the workforce, out of necessity. The number of women entering the work force has grown significantly to become well over half of the American labor market.
D. The financial prosperity of many American elderly has aggressively increased. Many elderly who are 70 or older now have enough financial stability to afford assisted living making this a viable option of going into assisted living with less of a luxury and a financial strain. Health-optioned assisted living can be less financially stressful than even most hospital stays.
E. State and federal managed care and collaborate agency-driven healthcare systems have aggressively looked for ways to make health care more affordable for everyone and with the elderly, assisted living becomes a moderate cost alternative to skilled nursing care or long term care. The comparable rate for assisted living in a private room is about two-thirds of equal amenities in a long term care facility.
Assisted living in its primary focus is to allow the elderly to experience normal living routine and continuity of care with minimal medical and social services. Those persons who are able to implement assisted living may need nominal care and without stringent medical/nursing interventions. While living in assisted care, the person may still continue daily activities, and many facilities offer amenities such as recreation, shopping and chore assistance, and even on-site/visiting medical care. Facilities in larger cities are of greater consideration because they simply have more to offer in care options and amenities. Older persons can still go about as they normal would and have the support they need to live as independently as possible. In Daly City is conveniently located near San Francisco. Oakland, and Berkeley, California, so there is a lot to see and do from this small, but thriving area. The cost of assisted living in the area is moderate, at roughly $20,500 a year.
