For many older adults, religion makes a major difference in senior care. Presbyterian senior living gives older adults the care they need, a sense of community, and access to religious services to support their faith. For many, spirituality and faith are vital to their well-being, which makes looking for faith-based senior care a priority.

In this guide, we’ll go over what Presbyterian senior care is, how it’s different from other senior living facilities, who runs these communities, and tips for finding the right Presbyterian senior living facility in your area.

What Is Presbyterian Senior Care

What Is Presbyterian Senior Care?

Presbyterian senior care offers caregiving and services that are guided by Christ-centered values. It gives older adults who want to incorporate their faith into daily living a nurturing environment where they can be surrounded by a community of like-minded seniors. These senior care and assisted living communities support seniors in maintaining their physical and spiritual well-being at the same time.

How Is Presbyterian-Based Senior Living Different Than Non-Religious Care?

For Presbyterian and other faith-based facilities, religious components make up a part of daily care. Whether it’s daily prayer groups or offering transportation to religious services, these facilities consider patients’ religions. Prayer groups at senior care centers may also be part of the program. Other types of faith-based services may include:

  • Visitation by a pastor at your request
  • Spiritual comfort and support for you and your family
  • Help to cope with serious illness and end-of-life issues
  • Coordination of religious services

The types of religious activities and services offered will differ from facility to facility. If you are looking for something in particular, it’s always a good idea to ask if the facility provides it.

Who Operates Presbyterian-Based Senior Care Centers?

Presbyterian-based senior care facilities are usually run by nonprofit organizations. Their mission is to serve seniors while enriching their lives through faith-based care. These organizations use the profits of their facilities to improve and focus on their quality of care.

Each Presbyterian senior community has a board of directors that oversees how the facility is run. These board members usually practice the Presbyterian faith, and some are connected directly to a local Presbyterian ministry. Their job is to make sure that the facilities reflect their mission and are giving residents proper care.

How Much Does Presbyterian Senior Housing Cost?

The cost of Presbyterian housing doesn’t differ much from other senior care facilities. There are other factors that affect the cost of senior care, like the type of care and location. You can research both faith-based and non-faith-based senior housing at local facilities to get a better idea of the costs.

To get a more accurate estimate, you can look at national medians for senior care and housing options. For example, the median cost for a private room at a nursing home facility is $9,872 per month, while assisted living costs less at $4,917 per month.2 However, these costs will vary greatly by state and facility.

You can also take into account other factors, like insurance, to see how much you’ll pay out of pocket. Skilled nursing and rehabilitation facilities usually take Medicare, but costs at assisted living facilities aren’t normally covered. If you’re unsure of how much senior housing will cost, contact the communities you’re interested in. You can ask them what insurance they take, and their payment options.

FYI:

FYI: It’s common to pay for assisted living by combining Social Security, long-term care insurance, and personal savings. Be sure to consider these options and more when looking for an assisted living facility or other senior community.

Some faith-based senior facilities may provide residents with financial flexibility, as they are often run by nonprofits. It doesn’t hurt to ask what options are available based on your budget.

Tips For Finding Presbyterian Senior Living

Tips for Finding Presbyterian Senior Living

There are many ways to find a local Presbyterian senior facility or community. Some Presbyterian churches and ministries offer community resources on their website. You can also search your local churches to see if they have a directory for senior care or housing. If the church doesn’t have a website, you can give them a call or visit in person to ask about any resources they offer.

Another way to find Presbyterian senior living in your area is to conduct a Google search. If you’re looking for Presbyterian independent living in Southern California, go to the Google homepage and type in “Presbyterian independent living in Southern California.” The results will direct you to Presbyterian senior communities that offer independent living. You can browse the search results to find the right community for you or a loved one.

You can also call local senior living communities and see if they offer religious services. Some senior living facilities and nursing homes may offer religious services for residents even if they’re not specifically a Presbyterian community.

There are Presbyterian organizations that help seniors find faith-based care and community. One resource is the Presbyterian Association of Homes & Services for the Aging (PAHSA). PAHSA is a national association of Presbyterian organizations serving older adults. We’d recommend searching their community directory to find Presbyterian senior care near you.
