Portland (OR) Senior Living Communities
Getting used to the rain may be the biggest challenge for retirees considering Portland. Hurdle that natural obstacle and you’ll find a city serious on outdoor activities and cultural attractions.
First, here are a few financial facts you may be interested in. Portland’s overall cost of living is 10% above the national average. Oregon does not tax Social Security benefits but will tax your pensions. If you’re thinking about Portland senior living, expect to pay $3,498 a month on average for assisted living. And you’ll pay on average $239 a day for a private nursing home room, says a Genworth Financial survey on long-term care.
Portlanders love to get outside, maybe in part to spite the rain. The city has 315 miles of bikeways and the country’s largest percentage (7%) of bicycle commuters. The 5,100-acre Forest Park, an urban forest reserve, features over 70 miles of trails where you can find over 175 different species of animals. Water-lovers can kayak or canoe through downtown and explore the wildlife sanctuaries of Oaks Bottoms and Bybee Lakes. Like to fish? The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife shows you “50 places to go fishing within 60 minutes of Portland.”
Among Portland’s attractions is the International Rose Test Garden, a public rose garden featuring over 8,000 roses. Walk in a replica of a Ming Dynasty garden at the Lan Su Chinese Garden with its bridges, pavilions and lake. Prepare to be “wowed” at The Oregon Museum of Science and Industry with its interactive exhibits (experience an earthquake), planetarium and OMNIMAX Dome Theater.
Imagine if Amazon.com were a physical bookstore. That’s what Powell’s City of Books actually is—a store that takes up an entire Portland city block and features over 1.5 million books in 3,500 different sections.
