Greensboro (NC) Senior Living Communities

For a small big city, Greensboro has a healthy amount of amenities to keep a retiree busy. That’s one of the reasons it was recently voted one of “America’s 50 Best Cities” by Businessweek magazine. Before you start looking for Greensboro senior living options, see what makes this North Carolina city so attractive.

Here’s a snapshot of what you’ll find in “The Boro”: 636 restaurants, 36 museums, 10 colleges and 13 libraries. And here are a handful of must-see attractions. The Guildford Courthouse National Military Park commemorates the battle that started America’s road to winning the Revolutionary War. The International Civil Rights Center and Museum memorializes the 50th anniversary of the sit-in.

The 17-acre Greensboro Arboretum features fauna and flora collections as well as fountains, gazebos and bridges for a relaxing natural experience. The Natural Science Center of Greensboro is one of the most popular attractions in the city. The center’s zoo is home to lemurs, a wallaby, a two-toed sloth, maned wolves, a 92-year-old alligator snapping turtle named “Bone-Crusher” and many more. Another part of the center is the Omnisphere Dome where 3-D movies and laser light shows are played to awed audiences.

For performing arts lovers there’s the Carolina Theater, City Arts, Community Theater of Greensboro, Greensboro Ballet, Greensboro Symphony and the Greensboro Opera Company.

For budget-conscious seniors, Greensboro is refreshing. The overall cost of living is equal to the national average. Greensboro senior living options are inexpensive compared to most cities. For example, a one-bedroom in an assisted living facility averages $3,000 a month--according to a Genworth Financial survey—about $300 below the U.S. average. A private room in a nursing home averages $200 a day, while a semi-private averages $185.
