Baltimore (MD) Senior Living Communities

There is a saying in Baltimore that crabs may be prepared in fifty ways and that all of them are good—H.L. Mencken

The crabs are not the only good thing about B’more. Gentrified neighborhoods, big-city attractions, and a close proximity to the water, mountains, and Eastern cities make Baltimore senior living attractive.

In some ways Baltimore is inexpensive but in other ways, not so much. For example, the overall cost of living is 20% higher than the national average. But Maryland’s combined state and local tax burden is only 6%, according to the Tax Foundation. Some senior living is also reasonable. A one-bedroom in an assisted living facility averages $3,000 a month, according to a Genworth Financial study on long-term care. A private room in a nursing home will average $250 a day, while a semi-private averages $235 a day.

Unlike crabs, there are more than 50 ways to spend your day in Baltimore. Try a cruise in Baltimore Harbor. Follow the Sultan of Swat’s career at the Babe Ruth Museum and Birthplace, a National Historic Site. Walk in the shoes of a famous writer at the Edgar Allen Poe Museum. Visit the Fort McHenry National Monument and see where the “Star-Spangled Banner” was written. Peak into the city’s past exploring museums such as the Baltimore Civil War Museum, the Baltimore Museum of Industry, and the Irish Shrine and Railroad Worker’s Museum.

Do you enjoy the performing arts? There’s the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, Baltimore Opera, Hippodrome Theater, Everyman Theater, Center Stage, Single Carrot Theater and many others.

You’ll have no problem getting around Baltimore or to places outside the city. A recent study ranked Baltimore as the 14th most walkable cities out of the biggest 50 U.S. cities. Amtrak at Penn Station will spirit you away to destinations such as Washington D.C., Boston and New York.
