Louisville (KY) Senior Living Communities

This city on the Ohio River is perhaps best known for the Kentucky Derby and the Louisville Slugger. But get to know Louisville, and you’ll find there’s so much more. For retirees on a budget, Louisville is an affordable choice. The overall cost of living is 9% below the national average. Social Security is not taxed and some income (up to $41,110) military retirement, private pensions and state/local government is exempt. Louisville senior living options such as assisted living is below the national rates, averaging $3,090 a month, according to Genworth Financial’s survey on long-term care.

For golfers, the City of Louisville offers six 18-hole courses and three 9-hole courses. And seniors, you’ll pay less than $10 to play 18! Cycle the Louisville Loop that meanders around the city with a path along the Ohio River. The current 30 miles will be expanded to 110 miles of paths by 2013. South of downtown is the 6,218-acre Jefferson Memorial Park, the largest urban forest in the country. Here you’ll find hiking trails, fishing docks, Great Horned Owls and bobcats.

The Kentucky Derby is part of the Kentucky Derby Festival, which includes a fireworks show, balloon race, marathon, steamboat race, and basically two weeks of events and parties. Every Memorial Day the city hosts the largest Beatles festival in the world, Abbey Road on the River. There’s also the Kentucky Shakespeare Festival, Gaslight Festival, and the Kentucky State Fair just to name a few.

Some of Louisville’s can’t-miss cultural attractions include the Frazier International History Museum, Muhammad Ali Center, Louisville Science Center, Carnegie Center for Art and History, and the Speed Art Museum.
