The Greater Fort Wayne Aviation Museum highlights the area’s flying history featuring the lives of several wartime aces. Other local attractions include the Fort Wayne Firefighters’ Museum and the historic Embassy Theater that hosts Broadway plays, concerts, cinema and educational programs.

 

Get outside and explore the city on the Rivergreenway, a 25-mile network of trails that meander alongside the city’s three rivers: St. Joseph, St. Mary’s and Maumee. In addition, Fort Wayne Parks and Recreation maintains 84 parks covering over 2,800 acres. Among the larger parks are

Fox Island, Metea, Payton and Cook’s Landing. Other ways to get outside are at one of the city’s many festivals such as BBQ RibFest, Germanfest, Greek Fest, Three Rivers Festival and the Johnny Appleseed Festival.

The cost of living is 3% below the national average. Fort Wayne senior living options are a mixed story. For example, a one-bedroom in an assisted living facility averages $4,185 a month, according to a Genworth Financial survey. The national average is $3,261. A private room in a nursing home averages $212 a day, which is almost even with the national median. Similarly, a semi-private room averages $187 a day. In Indiana, Social Security income is exempt from taxes.
