How We Chose the Best Assisted Living in Baton Rouge

Baton Rouge has dozens of great assisted living options, so choosing the best communities required a detailed approach. Our housing experts spent over 50 hours researching and comparing facilities. We used the factors below to evaluate each location and find the best options:

  • Cost: We tried to include assisted living communities at various price points. We considered factors such as what services were included in the cost, whether residents had to pay additional entrance fees, and what value the assisted living community offered. Any prices listed in this article came from community websites or conversations with staff members.
  • Available care types: We also thought about the types of care that each community offered, including whether a community could meet a resident’s changing care needs over time.
  • Amenities: Amenities can play a key role in your enjoyment and quality of life at an assisted living community. We looked for facilities that had a variety of amenities designed to support resident wellness and comfort.
  • Location: We researched each community’s location and thought about how it would impact resident life, such as whether residents could easily access local health care, shopping, and dining opportunities.
  • Staff: Since staff play such a major role in residents’ lives, we looked for locations that hire talented, knowledgeable staff and that maintain an appropriate staff-to-resident ratio so that residents can receive the individualized care they need.
  • Reviews: We spent hours reading reviews of each assisted living community. Rather than focusing on any one review, we looked for common themes mentioned in multiple reviews. We then shared those themes in our write-ups below.

    Overview

Garden View Assisted Living specializes in tailoring services to each individual’s needs. One- and two-bedroom suites are available, and the monthly rate includes services such as assistance with activities of daily living, complimentary transportation for medical appointments and errands, breakfast, lunch, and evening meals served in the dining room, weekly housekeeping, laundry, and flat linen services, utilities, and more. The services included in the base price are extensive, and they’re likely all that many assisted living residents will need. This is perfect for those who don’t want to be charged for every individual amenity and service.

However, Garden View Assisted Living also offers a full suite of enhanced services to ensure that residents can access the specific care that they need. Just a few of these enhanced services include escorts to and from activities and meals, routine checks every two hours, daily bed making, medication reminders, a hydration program, and more. We appreciate this extra attention to resident health, with unique services like the hydration program. After all, seniors are more susceptible to dehydration, so drinking enough fluids is key1!

These services allow residents to further customize their care for enhanced safety and comfort. As a result, this community might be ideal for you if your care needs go a bit beyond what’s typically included in assisted living services.

    Types of Care

Garden View Assisted Living offers assisted living, memory care and special care, short term stays, and enhanced care services. The availability of options like short-term stays and enhanced care services makes this community a more versatile solution than the Williamsburg Senior Living Community, another community on our list that has fewer care options.

Trained staff are on-site 24 hours a day, and specialized services like incontinence management are offered. This community uses an emergency call system, personal call pendants, surveillance cameras, smoke alarms, sprinkler systems, and alarmed doors to help ensure resident safety. That dedication to safety can give both residents and their families additional peace of mind.

    Feedback and Reviews

This community has received largely positive reviews. Many reviews say the facility is bright and airy, the staff are warm and helpful, and the food is delicious. A few of the negative reviews left in the early 2000s state that the community is understaffed, and one reviewer wrote that her mother didn’t receive quality care while at the community. Just keep in mind, these negative reviews are very old, and we didn’t notice any consistent negative feedback in recent years.

    • Residents can choose from studio, one-bedroom, and two-bedroom apartments
    • Wireless emergency call system for resident safety
    • Assisted living includes some comprehensive services like twice a week housekeeping and laundry, daily dishwashing, and daily bed making

    Overview

At Williamsburg Senior Living Community, assisted living residents receive assistance with daily activities, including wake-up assistance, bathing assistance every other day, dressing, and medication reminders up to four times a day. However, this community stands out from other communities for the apartment care and maintenance services that the assisted living fees include.

Whereas other communities on our list, like Sunrise at Siegen, include housekeeping and laundry services once a week, Williamsburg Senior Living Community includes twice a week housekeeping and laundry. Residents also receive daily dishwashing, bed making, and trash removal services. Other communities rarely include dishwashing services. If you’re looking for the peace of mind of knowing that both your personal care and your apartment cleaning needs will be met, this might be the community for you.

Beyond the specific care services, the clubs and groups available also make this community stand out. Clubs and groups like bridge, writing, walking, sign language, and painting can give residents a sense of belonging, keep them engaged, and help prevent loneliness. The community also has a busy events calendar, with exercise classes, happy hours, manicures, and trips to local destinations to keep residents active. We appreciate the variety of amenities and activities the community offers for well-rounded living!

    Types of Care

Williamsburg Senior Living Community offers independent living, assisted living, and personal care services, like medication assistance, bathing, and dressing. Since the community doesn’t offer highly specialized or rehabilitative care, a community like Garden View Assisted Living might be a better fit if you want to be sure that your evolving care needs can be met. On the flip side, if you’re not quite ready for assisted living but think you may need some daily care in the future, Williamsburg’s independent living is a great option. Then, you can transition to assisted living if you need it in the future.

    Feedback and Reviews

Most reviews of Williamsburg Senior Living Community are positive, and reviewers describe the caregivers as being kind and treating residents with respect. Numerous reviewers say that their parents loved living in the community, and several reviews state the community is clean and well-maintained. One of the negative reviews describes the care as being terrible but doesn’t go into detail, and another reports that the elevator was repeatedly out of service.

Never take an individual review at face value, as everyone will have different experiences and feedback. Instead, we recommend considering common themes that you see in multiple reviews. For Williamsburg, we didn’t see any common negative themes, which is a good sign!

    Overview

Dining choices and nutrition are essential elements for keeping older adults healthy. Sunrise at Siegen has some unique approaches when it comes to providing dining choices that appeal to every resident.

This community features an evolving menu that incorporates community favorites, and all meals are prepared on-site. Residents can dine in the large dining room for important social connections, but the community also has a private dining room for special occasions.

Since resident dietary needs and preferences can vary, the Tableside Dining program uses tablet technology so that staff know every resident’s dining preferences during service. Staff can access every menu item description and ingredient list, so they can help residents make informed dining choices, and residents can place orders in real-time. We love this use of technology to meet residents’ dietary needs! Additionally, the bistro offers an assortment of snacks, fruit, cookies, coffee, and tea available throughout the day, providing another valuable socialization space.

    From the Pros:

From the Pros: Technology can help older adults in many different ways, from increasing safety to providing entertainment. Check out our guide on technology for seniors to learn more.

Sunrise at Siegen also notably uses a family engagement mobile app to help cultivate resident and family member connections. Through the app, residents and family members can share photos and videos from recent events. Residents can also share life stories with staff, which staff can then enter into the app, and family members can share their stories, in turn. This innovative use of technology is particularly valuable for residents whose family members don’t live nearby, or who may not be able to visit as often as they would like. It’s a unique offering that we don’t see with many communities, and we believe that it contributes to a higher quality of life.

    Types of Care

Sunrise at Siegen offers a wide variety of care options, including independent living, assisted living, memory care, skilled nursing, short-term stays, in-home care, and hospice coordination. While some communities like Williamsburg Senior Living Community only offer a few types of care, Sunrise at Siegen is a more versatile option that can tailor its services to meet your changing care needs as you age. This makes it an excellent choice for those who want a full continuum of care that can support evolving needs.

    Feedback and Reviews

Sunrise at Siegen has received overwhelmingly positive reviews. Many reviews state that staff and management go above and beyond to ensure residents receive quality care, and several reviewers said that their parents thrived while at the community. Several volunteers also left reviews that describe the community as a great place to volunteer. The only negative review that we found stated that management were uncaring, but didn’t go into much detail. Again, this was just one review — it wasn’t a common theme.

The name stands for “it’s never too late,” and we agree! It’s never too late for seniors to learn how to use technology. We’re all about empowering older adults with the latest tech, so we’re big fans of iN2L.

    Types of Care

Holly Court Assisted Living & Memory Care offers independent living, assisted living, and advanced memory care. Reviews of Holly Court are mostly positive. According to several reviews, the community is large and spacious, the residents receive attentive care, and the activities create an engaging environment. Staff turnover is a fairly common theme we see for assisted living communities across the country, so, unfortunately, this isn’t out of the ordinary.

Additionally, amenities like the pool and fitness studio play a crucial role in supporting resident wellness. These features help residents stay active and fit, which is important. Staying fit may help delay or prevent age-related health problems. Fitness can also help keep muscles strong, so residents are less likely to need to rely on caregivers for help2.

While communities like Williamsburg Senior Living Community use wireless emergency call systems so residents can alert staff in case of an emergency, the Claiborne at Baton Rouge takes a different approach. This community uses Foresite AI technology to monitor resident wellness. The technology tracks residents’ vital signs for changes that could signal illnesses, allowing the resident to get care early on.

It also analyzes walking patterns and other risk factors to determine if a resident is at risk of a fall. If a resident is identified as being a fall risk, staff can change their care plan to prevent the fall and help keep the resident safe. And, if falls do occur, a HIPAA-compliant fall video alerts caregivers so they can quickly respond without the resident having to summon help. This technology is a great investment in resident safety, and it can give residents and their families increased peace of mind. We’ve reviewed dozens of medical alert systems with fall detection, so we know just how important this technology is for preventing serious injuries. After all, around three million seniors are treated for fall-related injuries in emergency departments every year3.

How to Find the Right Assisted Living Community for You

While you may want to start your search by looking at the top assisted living communities in Baton Rouge that we highlighted, it’s important to find a community that’s the right fit for your needs and preferences. These tips may help you to narrow down your choices and find the best community for you:

  • Outline the care you’ll need: Make an honest evaluation of your current health and specific daily and weekly care needs. You may also want to consider what your care needs are likely to be in the coming years, so you can find a community that meets all of those needs.
  • Determine your ideal atmosphere: Consider the type of atmosphere that most appeals to you. You might want to think about factors like the size of the community, the availability of guided activities, and whether the location is surrounded by nature.
  • Calculate your budget: Take the time to create a budget that identifies how much you can comfortably spend per month. Keep in mind that Medicare generally doesn’t cover assisted living costs, so you’ll need to consider other options, like your Social Security benefits and retirement savings.
  • Think about your ideal location: A community’s location can impact your life, including your ability to access health care and how easily family and friends can visit. Think about the type of location that’s most ideal for your needs.
  • Read reviews: As you start to focus on a few assisted living communities, spend some time reading reviews that others have written about each community. Remember that any business will naturally receive a mix of positive and negative reviews over time, so don’t focus too much on any one review. Instead, look for common themes that are repeatedly mentioned.
  • Visit each community: Once you narrow down your potential options to a few places, go visit each community. During your visit, talk with both staff and current residents, and bring a list of questions to guide your conversations. Ultimately, listen to your gut instinct about each community.

What Is Living in Baton Rouge Like for Seniors?

Baton Rouge is the heart and soul of Louisiana. The city is rich with culture, hosts numerous festivals and events, and features the renowned Baton Rouge Health District. Here’s a quick look at what life in Baton Route is like for older adults.

  • Climate: Baton Route has short and mild winters, which can be ideal for older adults who don’t like the cold. However, the city also experiences hot and very humid summers, so older adults will want to seek out housing with a reliable, quality air conditioning system.
  • Health care: The Baton Rouge Health District refers to the medical corridor where you’ll find most of the city’s health care infrastructure. Organizations like the Baton Rouge Area Foundation, Ochsner Health, and Baton Rouge General are part of the district, which is designed to provide easy and convenient access to comprehensive health care4.
  • Cost of living: The cost of living in Baton Rouge is cheaper than many other comparable areas in the U.S., including New Orleans. Baton Rouge’s median housing costs in 2022 were $299,983, compared to the national average of $383,8835.
  • Activities: Baton Rouge has an active arts and culture scene, so older adults can experience art galleries, exhibitions, performing arts and theater, and live music venues. The city is also known for its fantastic selection of restaurants and rich culinary offerings.
  • Taxes: Louisiana uses a graduated individual income tax scale, and rates range from 1.85 to 4.25 percent6. Baton Rouge doesn’t tax Social Security benefits, so older adults are able to keep more of their benefits5.
  • Crime rate: Baton Rouge has a very high crime rate. As of 2020, the city’s crime rate was 2.1 times greater than the average crime rate in the U.S.8 Given this high crime rate, older adults will want to consider assisted living communities with security measures in place to protect residents.

How Much Does Assisted Living Cost in Baton Rouge, Louisiana?

According to Genworth, the median cost of assisted living in Baton Rouge is $4,507 per month. That’s lower than the national median of $4,917 per . These are just median costs, so remember that the exact cost you’ll pay depends on several factors.

The amount and type of care that you need will have a significant impact on your assisted living costs. If you have minimal care needs, your costs will be lower, but you’ll pay more for every service you need that isn’t included in the base rate. Since you may need more care as you age and since rates will gradually increase over time, it’s best to find a community that you can comfortably afford now so that you can handle future increases.

Your room choice also affects your costs. Smaller rooms cost less than larger rooms, so you’ll need to consider your budget when choosing your room.

Since there are dozens of assisted living communities in Baton Rouge, you’ll have plenty of options to choose from. Some of these facilities have base rates that are lower than the median rates. As you compare the communities, think about what services are included in the rates, what services you’ll need to pay extra for, and any entrance fees that the community charges.
