Oakland (CA) Senior Living Communities
The abundance of Oakland senior living options combined with the its many cultural attractions and close proximity to other cities, notably San Francisco, make it worth exploring.
In the heart of the city is Lake Merritt, a 155-acre fresh and salt-water lake. Here you’ll find the Rotary Nature Center, North America's oldest (1870) Wildlife Refuge and a perfect place to view resident and migratory waterfowl.
The Peralta Hacienda Historical Park offers a glimpse back into Oakland’s past. You can see the footprints of two adobes from the early 1800s and the remnants of a hacienda wall from the Spanish era. The park features historical exhibits and a garden. Tour or take a cruise aboard the USS Potomac, Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s Presidential Yacht. Stroll the streets of Old Oakland and browse the many shops.
On the water, you’ll find Jack London Square with its restaurants, bars, and shops. It’s also the beginning of the Jack London History Walk, which by way of wolf tracks, takes you along a London-themed trip back in time. The walk begins in front of Heinold’s First and Last Chance Saloon, a bar that London frequented and where, listening to the stories of its salty patrons, he discovered his love for adventure. Among the bar’s other notable customers are President Taft, Robert Louis Stevenson and Ambrose Bierce.
Other notable attractions include the Oakland Museum of California, Oakland Aviation Museum, Oakland Zoo, and the Chabot Space and Science Center.
