While Belmont Village Senior Living has an ideal location, it also offers plenty of amenities to help keep seniors comfortable. The property is meticulously landscaped, while the interiors have a warm décor that’s welcoming to residents and visitors alike. Seniors also have plenty of things to do in their free time, as Belmont offers refreshments courtesy of the on-site bistro, and daily enrichment activities. To make this community even more comfortable for pet owners, Belmont allows residents to bring their furry friends with them.

    Types of Care

Like Foxbridge Senior Living and Harborchase of Germantown, Belmont Village Senior Living offers assisted living, memory care, and respite care. This makes it an ideal choice for seniors who need assistance and have aging caregivers who may need a break from providing care to rest and recuperate.

» Useful Resource: Respite care costs

Belmont also goes above and beyond to ensure that couples can continue to live in the same community, even if they have differing needs. For example, if you need help getting in and out of the bath, but your spouse needs memory care, you can both receive care and live together at Belmont Village Senior Living. We appreciate this convenience for couples! In addition to the assistance you would expect from a quality assisted living and memory care community, Belmont offers on-site physical, speech, and occupational therapy, as well as special services and treatment options for diabetes patients. This is convenient for residents who want to receive some care without leaving the comfort of their own home.

    Feedback and Reviews

The majority of online reviewers have very positive things to say about Belmont Village Senior Living. Many talk about the professional and dedicated staff, from nurses who deliver medications right on time to kitchen staff who work hard to provide high-quality meals. Family members frequently praise the cleanliness of the community as well. However, a few people have taken issue with the behavior of the staff, specifically mentioning employees who were rude to residents and openly cursed on the job. Still, these negative reviews were the minority.

    Highlights

    • Assisted living, memory care, and respite care
    • Gated senior community with stocked fishing pond
    • Private and semiprivate accommodations
    • Extensive on-site medical services

    Overview

Many assisted living communities are “facilities” that fall somewhere between an apartment complex and a nursing home, but Foxbridge Senior Living is not one of them. Unlike Belmont, which is one large building with dozens of apartments, Foxbridge is a gated community with several cottages. Though it can’t accommodate as many residents as a larger community, Foxbridge Senior Living offers a homey vibe that would be difficult to replicate at a more traditional assisted living facility. We love this unique layout, as it provides a greater sense of independence and privacy for residents.

» Related Reading: Assisted living vs. nursing homes

Foxbridge Senior Living has a beautiful property with multiple cottage homes and a fully stocked fishing pond. This makes Foxbridge a great choice for older adults who enjoy fishing but still need to have professional help nearby. In addition to the pond, the Foxbridge property has plenty of landscaped areas, gardens, and walking paths. The community hosts tons of events to help bring residents together, including church services, bingo nights, exercise programs, movie nights, and more.

Foxbridge is very well-equipped to care for seniors with more complex medical needs, something you won’t find at all communities. Residents can access on-site physician care, lab work, physical therapy, and pharmaceutical services. One really unique feature at Foxbridge is the Snoezelen Room, which offers lowlight sensory stimulation, music, motion, touch, and aroma engagement to relieve stress. We love this extra care for resident health and well-being!

It’s also important to note that Foxbridge is one of the most affordable communities in Memphis — if you’re willing to share your cottage with another resident. The price jumps to $4,092 for a private room, so if you want more privacy and you’re on a budget, The Village at Primacy Place may be a better option.

    Types of Care

Among its primary care options, Foxbridge Senior Living offers assisted living, memory care, and respite care. The community also offers limited hospice services as needed, which means Foxbridge could potentially function as a full continuum of care community for seniors who want to age in place for the duration of their retirement. In general, Foxbridge Senior Living offers very comprehensive care, which includes less common features like on-site pharmacy services and regular visits from therapy dogs.

    Feedback and Reviews

Reviews frequently commend Foxbridge for its cleanliness and peacefulness, as well as the amazing tours offered by the community. In fact, several family members mentioned that the friendliness of the staff and their impressions of the cottages during the initial tour ultimately helped them choose Foxbridge. Very few people have complained about Foxbridge, but the limited rooms mean that you or a family member may have to wait for space to open up.

  • 3. Harborchase of Germantown

    Highlights

    • Assisted living, memory care, and respite care
    • Located near shopping and St. Francis Hospital of Memphis
    • High-end facility and amenities
    • Pet-friendly community

    Overview

Germantown is an affluent suburb of Memphis, and Harborchase is located right in the heart of the community. Harborchase of Germantown is just steps from the Ridgeway Trace Shopping Center, and a few blocks from St. Francis Hospital of Memphis. This makes it ideal for seniors who still feel comfortable walking, as they can easily access shops, restaurants, and medical care in minutes. Even if you struggle with mobility, Harborchase offers scheduled transportation for group outings to nearby attractions.

» Helpful Guide: Transportation for seniors

As a luxury senior living community, Harborchase of Germantown offers an enhanced living experience that’s hard to find elsewhere in Memphis. The property itself is a beautiful three-story living complex that features a large, elegant living room with a fireplace, a creative art space, a library, a chapel, a fitness center, a barber, a beauty salon, a courtyard with fountain, and an outdoor dining area. Every part of Harborchase of Germantown makes it feel like resort-style living without sacrificing the care and attention of an assisted living and memory care facility.

These perks come at a cost. Harborchase of Germantown is one of the more expensive communities in Memphis, and it’s far more expensive than communities like South Breeze Senior Living and The Village at Primacy Place. Assisted living starts at $5,995 per month, which is nearly $2,000 more than any other community on this list. While Harborchase is pet-friendly, you’ll have to pay even more in pet fees to bring your furry friend with you.

    Types of Care

Harborchase of Germantown offers assisted living, memory care, and respite care. This is pretty standard for Memphis, but it still ensures that seniors have a wide range of living options that can accommodate changing needs. Additionally, Harborchase includes a separate program known as The Sound for older adults with mild dementia. The Sound is specifically designed to help residents transition from assisted living to memory care through blended care, socialization, and special events. We’re big fans of this unique program, as it can make the transition to memory care easier.

    Feedback and Reviews

Harborchase receives overwhelmingly positive reviews from family members and staff. Most reviews praise the beauty of the property and the luxurious feeling you get when you step through the doors. However, not all feedback has been positive. One reviewer claimed that she had a very difficult time getting in contact with staff and that the caregivers failed to check on her mother at various times during her stay.

    Overview

South Breeze Senior Living is an Americare community located in the Cedar Lake neighborhood of East Memphis, a short distance from the TPC Southwind Golf Course and Windyke Country Club. South Breeze is a little farther from the city center than communities like Belmont Village Senior Living, but the quiet suburban surroundings may be preferable for some seniors. Plus, the community offers complimentary transportation to those who schedule it in advance, so the conveniences of the city are never too far away.

    Did You Know?

Did You Know? As of 2021, 87 percent of seniors aged 70 and older have a valid driver’s license.2

Americare takes a standardized approach to health and wellness in all of its communities, and this means that there are always plenty of activities to promote physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being. South Breeze also gives seniors a lot of choice when it comes to where and how they live. The community has six different care options, six assisted living apartment layouts (plus three memory care apartment layouts), and the option to choose a private or semiprivate living space. This helps seniors living on a budget and ensures that residents only pay for the services and accommodations they want or need.

    Types of Care

South Breeze Senior Living offers more care options than any other community on this list, including The Village at Primacy Place. At South Breeze, residents have access to assisted living, memory care, respite care, adult day care, hospice care, and short-term rehab. Though it lacks a skilled nursing facility, South Breeze has most of the care options that seniors will require at different stages of retirement. Like Foxbridge, South Breeze also offers a Snoezelen Room to provide additional stress relief and therapy to memory care residents.

    Feedback and Reviews

South Breeze Senior Living gets a lot of praise from family members for its cleanliness, caring staff, quality food, and sizable rooms. In general, families and residents have been very happy with their experiences at South Breeze. That said, there are always exceptions. One reviewer complained that items like socks and towels would often go missing, and that not all of the memory care staff were as attentive as he would have hoped.

  • 5. The Village at Primacy Place

Affordable and amenity-rich assisted living community

    Highlights

    • Assisted living, respite care, rehabilitation, and hospice care
    • Dozens of on-site amenities
    • Affordable and transparent pricing
    • Pet-friendly community

    Overview

The Village at Primacy Place sits right across the street from St. Francis Hospital of Memphis in East Memphis. This is ideal for seniors who want to have quick and easy access to medical and emergency care. The location is close to shopping and plenty of restaurants, and The Village offers scheduled transportation; if you or your loved one like to go out and enjoy the city from time to time, or if you just like the security of being near a hospital, The Village at Primacy Place is a good choice.

» Dive Deeper: Tennessee senior living statistics and facts

What really sets The Village apart from other senior communities in the area is the affordable pricing. Assisted living starts at just $3,750 per month for a private studio apartment, which is roughly $350 less per month than a private apartment at Foxbridge Senior Living. Despite the low cost, the community offers plenty of amenities and activities for seniors. Residents can enjoy exercise classes, worship services, library and computer access, game rooms, movie nights, and happy hour. Though The Village boasts well-managed gardens and clean interiors, it can’t quite compare to the luxury and décor of Harborchase of Germantown.

    Types of Care

The Village at Primacy Place offers assisted living, respite care, rehabilitation, and hospice care. This makes it one of the few communities in Memphis that doesn’t offer memory care. While The Village still gives you plenty of ways to live comfortably and receive the care you need, the lack of memory care might make it a bad choice for seniors who are beginning to experience cognitive decline. If you have Alzheimer’s or dementia, you may not be admitted to The Village, and if you develop some form of dementia after moving in, you may be required to find a different community that offers memory care.

    Feedback and Reviews

The Village at Primacy Place receives a lot of great feedback for the respectful staff, welcoming environment, and strong sense of “family” among caregivers and residents. A lot of family members also express appreciation for the clean facilities and worship services. However, a few people have complained about the inattentive staff and mediocre food.

How We Chose the Best Assisted Living in Memphis

Memphis is one of the largest cities in the state of Tennessee and has more than two dozen assisted living communities to choose from. We narrowed down our list using a few important factors:

  • Cost: The cost of assisted living in Memphis is lower than the national average. We tried to find assisted living communities that could fit varied budgets, but we ultimately focused our attention on the ones that offer the most value to seniors.
  • Available care: All of the communities on our list include assisted living and at least two other types of care. This helps ensure that older adults in Memphis can continue to age in place even as their needs change.
  • Reviews: We spend hours reading through reviews to see what real people are saying about assisted living communities in Memphis. This way, we can get a feel for different communities and cover some of the advantages and disadvantages of living in each one.
  • Amenities: Quality amenities can make all the difference in the world for the residents of an assisted living community. We look for communities that offer a lot of amenities to meet the varied preferences of older adults.
  • Location: Many assisted living communities in Memphis are located far from the city center, which usually translates to a more tranquil living environment. Despite the distance from downtown Memphis, we try to look for communities that are close to shopping, restaurants, and hospitals.
  • Staff size: We highlighted assisted living communities that offer a high staff-to-resident ratio, often with a maximum of eight residents per caregiver.

How to Find the Right Assisted Living Community for You

To help you find the right assisted living for you, here are some of the most important things to consider:

  • Identify your needs: Your specific needs will be the primary way to narrow down the list of possible communities. For example, if you have dementia, you’ll need a community that offers memory care.
  • Review your budget: Assisted living in Memphis is a bit expensive compared to other cities in the region, and prices typically increase each year. Always consider your budget before making a choice. While analyzing your budget, remember that Medicare usually doesn’t cover assisted living. Many seniors depend on Social Security benefits, retirement savings, and long-term care insurance to cover costs.
  • Read reviews: We read a lot of reviews on your behalf, but this doesn’t mean you should just take our word for it! Reading through reviews can help you learn about all the little details that we can’t cover in this guide.
  • Visit communities: Going to a community in person is the best way to know if it’s a good fit for you. You can often tour the facility and grounds, talk to residents and staff, and ask questions about services and amenities.
  • Check licensing and certifications: While researching a community, check that it has up-to-date licensing and certifications to operate in Tennessee.
  • Trust your gut: When in doubt, remember to trust your gut! You may find it difficult to decide between two or more similar senior communities, but you can often trust yourself to make the right choice (once you’ve done your homework).

What Is Living in Memphis Like for Seniors?

Memphis is a fun city with a great music scene, but is it a good place to live for seniors? Below is a quick look at what life is like for older adults in Memphis, Tennessee.

  • Climate: Memphis has a humid subtropical climate that experiences long, hot, humid summers, and short, mild winters. While the warmer climate may be preferable for most seniors, it’s still important to avoid overheating during the summer months.
  • Health care: Memphis has a large network of quality hospitals and clinics, many of which specialize in care for seniors.
  • Cost of living: The cost of living in Memphis is about 13 percent lower than the national average. This means that it’s a pretty affordable place to live for seniors, particularly compared to many other large cities in the region.
  • Walkability: Memphis is a walkable (or bikeable) city with various public transportation options. However, since most assisted living communities are far from the city center, most residents living in senior communities won’t be close to the more walkable neighborhoods.
  • Activities: The city has a lot of fun things to do for seniors, including museums, historical sights, music festivals, and public parks.
  • Safety: Memphis has a relatively high crime rate compared to similarly sized cities, but safety can vary from one neighborhood to the next.
  • Tax structure: Tennessee doesn’t institute state income tax, and while the state did have an inheritance tax until 2015, it doesn’t currently levy inheritance or estate tax.3 That could have a very positive impact on estate planning.

How Much Does Assisted Living Cost in Memphis, Tennessee?

The median cost of assisted living in Memphis is $4,589 per month in 2024, based on Genworth estimates. That makes it about seven percent lower than the national median of $4,917.4

Memphis is generally an affordable city, whether or not you require assisted living. And as you can see from our list, there are communities in Memphis for just about every budget. The type of care can also affect how much you pay. For example, memory care is more expensive than assisted living care in Memphis and most other locations. Luckily, there is a wide range of options in Memphis, so you can find one that’s right for your needs and budget.
