Decades ago, Arizona was the destination for retirees. Though a lot has changed since then, the things that brought seniors to the Grand Canyon State—plentiful sunshine, a relatively low cost of living and excellent healthcare—are still here.
And the available options for Arizona assisted living are as abundant as ever. Finding the right care facility depends on where you want to live and how much you can afford. Before you start your search, learn more about what you can expect in this desert state.
“A new way of life for the old” read the 1960 Time magazine cover. This new life was the retirement community of Sun City in the Phoenix metro area. Del Webb built it, and they came by the thousands. With a 9-hole golf course, community center, shopping and new homes, this really was a “retirement worth looking forward to!” Delbert Webb wouldn’t recognize Arizona today, but he would undoubtedly be happy.
Today, Arizona has thousands of senior living options with assisted living one of the fastest growing in the state.
The overall cost of living in Arizona is about 5% above the national average. The tax picture is pretty good too. Social Security and $2,500 of military, civil service and Arizona state/local pensions are exempt. Plus, there’s no inheritance tax. Arizona assisted living costs are consistent across the state with one exception. The state average—according to a Genworth Financial survey—is $3,000 a month for basic care. The Phoenix area is also $3,000, Tucson is $3,200, while Flagstaff is $4,099.
The largest number of healthcare providers resides in the largest city, Phoenix. Banner Health is the largest hospital in the state with nearly 30,000 employees and dozens of facilities in the Phoenix area. Catholic Healthcare West is another large provider with 18 locations in Phoenix. There’s even the Del Webb Memorial Hospital in where else but Sun City.
